seasonal desktop (idea)

KDE4 Brainstorm

seasonal desktop (idea)

Submitted:  Oct 1 2006

Description:

The idea is to make the desktop look depending on the current season and/or weather.

With such option the user could define a theme for each season and kde4 could fade from one to the other in some way (smooth or sharp? I don't know).
For the desktop wallpapers we could define a folder for each season/month.

For a live environment-integration kde4 could connect to a weather server and modify the aspect depending on the response (rain-sun-snow ...).

With the new philosophy of a really extendable kde, this feature could/should be released as extension.

I think there's no need to provide too much detailed configuration paramenters, maybe just 4 themes (with respective folders for wallpapers). All the details should be automatized.

I think that the desktop integration with the environment is a very important step. Such feature could become not only a pure aesthetic improvement but it opens a natural way to other extensions.
Once kde knows what's the weather around you, the possibilities are infinite.

( p.s: sorry for my english and for my poor graphic capabilities )

 Not a bad idea

It's not a bad idea, but it should be off by default. And also, if anyone wishes to change the wallpaper, they should have to deactivate this (that is, they should be unable to change until it's deactivated) to prevent conflicts.
There should also be more modes than just seasons. For instance, if it's raining (irt could use for example AccuWeather to get that info) it could put on a sunny wallpaper.

The more configuration options, the better. :)

I agree that it may be disabled by default.

well, that's exacly what I sad in my post:

I have had the same idea. And I think it would be very cool if the background didn't only depend on the weather, but also the time.

For example, if it is early in the morning, and it's very dark in your room, you probably don't want to see a very light background.

Maybe this is a little bit too advanced, but it would be really cool. Maybe there could be some "Dynamic Backgrounds" which you could download, which contain the background needed and a file which tells the screensaver how the background will change.

And it would be great with a tool to create your own dynamic background (maybe a little advanced, but it should have an easy GUI, and you should be able to create one without knowing programming).

Well, what do you think?
Maybe I'll upload a Flash someday to show you how it could look like.

I think you are in the right way: a night/day dependence of the theme can not miss in the configuration panel!

Stardock makes something exactly like this for Windows called "Natural Desktop" - it changes your desktop background based on the time of day / season, and also adds some nature sounds (if desired) to make it more realistic. My sister uses it and it's pretty cool. I've looked for a Linux equivalent but couldn't find one so something lie this would be a great idea to make KDE more appealing for those who like this sort of thing. The little weather / control applet they use looks like something SuperKaramba could implement though so maybe this is something that can be added to LiquidWeather (or at least work in conjunction with it)? We'll have to see what KDE4 has in store maybe it'll be easier to add something like this then.

Gosh! I really believed that this idea could be a kde4 exclusive. :(

 Wallpaper widgets

by Kwilliam on: Oct 1 2006

I've thought of this idea before also, (back when I used Windows) but never implemented it. I took the idea one step further further. Imagine you have a series of photos taken one hour apart, and your desktop not only shows the season and weather, but also the time of day: you could see the sun rise and move across the screen. (Since it would be nearly impossible to get time-lapse photos for all seasons in all weather, perhaps they could be computer renderings.)

Perhaps that's going overboard, but on a broader note, I think that there is a demand for more dynamic wallpapers in general. Instead of a static wallpaper, why not let people write "Wallpaper Widgets" with the new superkaramba integration? Imagine a desktop that showed a different picture if you have new email, or that turned different shades of colors depending on the "Homeland Security Threat level", or that displayed a slideshow of the latest NASA images. Multiple background widgets could be layered so that you could have a desktop that showed the weather by default, an envelope if you had new mail, AND was tinted the color of the national threat level! (Note, this would need good transparency support.) A generic wallpaper widget should be included by default that displays a static image or a slideshow.
