A actually already hacked it up-- Copied over a patch of stars twice to make it wide enough.
I'm coming back to this page so I can get the original picture again-- I need to tack on another copy of the image to the right, because I'm running a dual-head setup with Xinerama now and it's not wide enough. The second monitor is a square screen so I need the original. :)

Looks really good, even if I do have to stretch it a bit for my monitor.
It would probably be easy to scale it up to widescreen using liquid rescale in the gimp. I'll try it later. |

I haven't made it, even if I did make it, the GNOME people don't like to accept patches from other people from some reason. (They even turned down patches from Linus himself!) |

Might be good if you've got a massive projector screen, but for a laptop, there's simply not enough room to curve the panel and lock off two corners like that. |

Already exists. It's called a "drawer." Simply add a "drawer" applet to the panel, and then it behaves like a hybrid of a pull-down menu and an extra gnome panel. You can drag and drop more launchers to it and everything.
Although, I've always wanted text labels on panel launchers. |
