This is essentially how Nautilus and Windows Explorer in Windows Vista is doing it. But they are doing it better by not having the user click on a relatively small target. With these programs you click on the folder names.

Your idea is better than nautilus in the fact that you can change folders also.

Hmmm...
Mar 27 2006  on content Konqueror for a New Experience

The right sidebar doesn't really work with that view mode. The only view mode that it really works well in is the column view ala Finder. In column view the information and action buttons are close to all files/folders that a user can choose at that particular folder depth (or directory depth if you want inconsistency :P).

Also the Menu button is pointless as it doesn't safe enough space with the menu hidden.

Slightly off topic: Can someone please make a mockup for KMplayer. It has the worst UI I have ever seen. KDE4 needs a polished looking media player. I love your work KMplayer devs though.

I somewhat agree. I think disorganised though is the wrong word. More like information overload. Somehow the right sidebar needs to be integrated into the file list/browser (middle section of your mockup).

Tooltips already do an ok job of this. however i like the idea of 'zoomable' icons. where zoomable means you are shown larger thumbnails and more information when you 'zoom' in further. but how would you 'zoom' in without a slider and using the keyboard? its a hard nut to crack.
