The top one is the old style, and the bottom two are the closest I could get with the new style. Also, you can see that nice xrender thing working alongside the stripe in the old version. Pity about that :( |

That's why I'm using lipstik, too - it's all because of the sexy menu stripe!
But it's gone in 2.2 - there's either a fadeout gradient or a solid colour, neither of which are anywhere near as nice.
You should have kept the option for the slight gradient bordered by the 1px hard line... that's what I had before I upgraded to 2.2, and that's why I was using lipstik in the first place. |

jls raised a valid point above about users' expectations of window flipping being locked down to configuration alone.
Maybe we should go one step further and make it appear that we're looking straight-on at one face of a cube - that way we have up to 6 windows for the price of one!
Obviously not all apps would need this many faces, so perhaps we could have visual hints from the window manager which ones are "active" - perhaps little grab handles on the edges we can spin to, so we can use the mouse to turn the cube, which then snaps in position when you let go?
