Description:

KOSD is a simple framework for the KDE Desktop providing an OSD in response to media key presses.

How to install:

Step 1:
If you have an older version of KOSD already installed, remove it completely before proceeding.

Step 2:
To build and install KOSD change to the extracted source directory and type:

mkdir build && cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ..
make
make install (as root)

Step 3:
Log out and back in to make sure the modules are loaded correctly by KDED (or run kquitapp kded && kded4).

Step 4:
In System Settings go to Shortcuts and Gestures->Global Keyboard Shortcuts. Select KOSD from the components list and reassign your keys as needed.

Step 5:
Go to Workspace Appearance->On-Screen Display to adjust KOSD to your liking.

That's it. Enjoy!

P.S.: Don't like monochrome icons? Then create the file .kde4/share/config/kosd_keysrc. Put the lines

[General]
UseSvg=0

in it and restart the KOSD Keys service.

You can also set the mixer control by adding the line

MixerControl=name

where name is the name of your desired control (e.g. Master, PCM, ...).

Changelog:

Changelog from 0.8.0 to 0.8.1
* Fixed some power management issues

Changelog from 0.7.1 to 0.8.0
* Added standard methods for battery, brightness and volume, allowing the pixmaps to be kept in memory, which avoids hard disk reads and makes the OSD more responsive

Changelog from 0.7.0 to 0.7.1
* Fixed a possible crash, if no mixer control named "Master" exists

Changelog from 0.6.2 to 0.7.0
* Changed KOSD Keys Service to use ALSA directly instead of relying on KMix

Changelog from 0.6.1 to 0.6.2
* Fixed CMakeLists.txt not to link against libsolidcontrol which is no longer used

Changelog from 0.6.0 to 0.6.1
* Made KOSD Keys Service compatible with KDE SC 4.6

Changelog from 0.5.1 to 0.6.0
* Added support for (Plasma-themed) SVG icons
* Many improvements throughout the code

Changelog from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1
* Fixed the mixer to always use the correct master channel

Changelog from 0.4.2 to 0.5.0
* Split up the monolithic application into a KDED module for the OSD, a KDED module for the key listener, a system settings module and a simple access library allowing any application to use the OSD
* Replaced the old OSD by new, fully Plasma based OSDs. There's now a "standard" OSD similar to the old one and a "compact" OSD similar to the OSDs provided by KMix and Powerdevil

amixer if there is no kde

by biophysics on: Aug 14 2008

Score 50%

Hi Marel

Is it possible to add support to increase and decrease volume using "amixer". I am a great fan of KDE (on Desktop) but in a laptop I use icewm - I would prefer to avoid to have better battery life.

Many thanks ...

 Don't work for me... :-(

Hi all I'm in SuSE 11.0 and i've tried to configure compile and install kosd latest version.
Configuration and creation of Makefile.cvs are both Ok but when I try to make && make install it sends me this message: "two targets named '/opt/kde3/share/apps/kosd/themes/Crystal' define rules!"...

Help me please!!! This software is great!!

Bye, klez

 KDE4 port

Really awesome job you did! I really like the look&feel of the new KOSD for KDE4.

However i noticed following problem.
Volume up seems not to work. Pressing the key assigned for increasing volume displays the OSD with "Volume UP" text, however volume is not increased.

Volume down and Mute work fine.

Thanks for the feedback.
Can you tell me what the meter/progressbar displays? Does it show the right volume? Or the wrong volume or nothing?

It displays the right volume and text volume up (so looks like the shortcut is working).

I also tried assigning different keys e.g. F8, F9 etc. instead of the multimedia keys.

Sorry for double post. But i just noticed following thing.

If i decrease volume to 0% and try to increase volume then it increases to 2%. After that i changed volume step from the default 2% to e.g. 3% and volume up seems to work. Reverting it to 2% or 1% breaks it again.

That's strange. I can't reproduce the problem here. Can you tell me what distribution and KDE version you are using?

I'm using Arch Linux and KDE 4.2 (KDEMod). The lowest volume step that i can set to make volume up work is 4%. 3% makes it stuck at 15% when increasing volume.

Ok. I think I know what causes this. Some sound cards provide a finer-grained control over the volume than others. For example my sound card provides absolute volumes from 0-127. Other cards provide less.

You can find out which range your sound card provides by running this command:

qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.absoluteVolumeMax Master:0

What does this give you?

The point is that when your sound card doesn't provide small enough volume steps then changing the volume by a small percentage (such as 1-3%) doesn't change anything.

I'll see if I can find a way to set the smallest volume step KOSD allows to the smallest step supported by individual sound cards.

qdbus org.kde.kmix /Mixer0 org.kde.KMix.absoluteVolumeMax Master:0

returns 31.

Should work correctly now in 0.4.1.
Thanks for the hint.

Just compiled the 0.4.1 version and it works like a charm. I can only set the multiple of 4 as a volume step, so there shouldn't be any problematic volume steps anymore. Thanks!

dude, this looks really great!

I'm running kubuntu 8.10 with kde 4.2
Qt: 4.4.3
KDE: 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0)

When I try to compile, I get this error.

I'm afraid building KOSD inside a build directory doesn't work because some files are generated automatically on-the-fly and these files have to be in the same directory as the other source files. You'll have to build KOSD as shown in the description above.
Hope that helps.

Now I try again and have this one.

alexis@alexis-linux:~/kde-look/kosd-0.4$ make
[ 8%] Building CXX object CMakeFiles/kosd.dir/powermanager.o
/home/alexis/kde-look/kosd-0.4/powermanager.cpp:25:40: error: solid/control/powermanager.h: No such file or directory

make[2]: *** [CMakeFiles/kosd.dir/powermanager.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [CMakeFiles/kosd.dir/all] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2

It's look like i'm missing some solid/powermanager(?) headers?
