Description:

Bluman is meant to be an uncreative drop-in blue replacement for the default Human themes in Ubuntu 8.04 for those wishing for another color option but enjoy the human style.

Based on the packages available in Ubuntu 8.04, I include three gtk-theme options (Bluman, Bluman-Clearlooks, Bluman-Murrine). Also included is a set of matching blue human style icons, backgrounds, gdm-themes, and a usplash-theme.

I've constructed these themes by color remixing the default files with Perl scripts. So I could in principle extend this batch of files to include other system files or other colors should there be interest in such things.

A green version is available as Greenman.

Based on the Hardy packages:
- human-icon-theme v0.28
- human-theme v0.18
- ubuntu-gdm-theme v0.29
- ubuntu-wallpapers v0.25

04/11/2008
- Based on updated Hardy defaults
- More strict following of theme organization and naming

04/20/2008
- Based on updated Hardy defaults
- Color of non-blue background elements in gtk-themes are faded at 50%
- Addition of Clearlooks and gdm themes
- Recommended background color (r,g,b) = (100,150,183)

04/25/2008
- Addition of BlumanList gdm theme

05/13/2008
- Addition of Bluman usplash theme (installs with startupmanager)

10/04/2008
- Added source files

Be nice if Ubuntu included alternatives like this in the repository.

I've tried to reproduce this error on a fresh virtual machine and am not able to see the boot text. My laptop also still shows the graphics and not text.

There is an option in startupmanager to show text (probably you have already made sure this is not requested).

It may also be necessary to wait for the post-config task run by startupmanger when exiting the program to complete before rebooting (I tried this too and still no text for me).

thanks for the info, but it's still not working for me. I'm using all the default settings in startupmanager,, do I have to select a certain resolution or colour depth?

Here is a summary of what is on my laptop (native 1280x800 -- recently installed bluman). Hope it helps.

using 1024x768x24
800x600x24 also works (pretty sure this is what is default in 8.04.1)
640x480x24 also works

The ubuntu-theme-ubuntu v0.18 doesn't appear to have native support (I'm looking at the base images) for resolutions higher than 1365x768 so for these remixes it is probably best to avoid the higher resolution options in startupmanager. The lower color bit rates should work (as I was using a lower value at one point), but the colors in the colormap are actually 24 bit.

using usplash & libusplash 0.5.19
startupmanager 1.9.11-1~hardy1

What I think startupmanager does is put the .so in /usr/lib/usplash, point to it via a series of soft links, and then updates the boot filesystem somehow, probably via update-initramfs. Check that:

> md5sum /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-bluman.so
780b287d9b0c7f16c68ef9573b09e28d /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-bluman.so

> ls -l /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2008-07-31 15:51 /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so -> /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so

> ls -l /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 2008-07-31 15:51 /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so -> /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-bluman.so

> ls -l /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-bluman.so
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 2663163 2008-07-31 09:20 /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-bluman.so

> more /etc/usplash.conf
# Usplash configuration file
xres=1024
yres=768

Thanks again, you've been a great help, but it still isn't working for me.
I've got the same version usplash and startupmanager, i've checked the md5 and tried the resolutions you suggested, but still nothing. I did a fresh install of ubuntu 8.04.1 before doing all this, updated completely, so I have no idea what's wrong.

Yeah, I'm pretty much stumped too. This file is fundamentally no different than the default just new colormaps. But as it is compiled, there may be a 32- vs 64-bit install, or graphics card issues at play (32-bit & nvidia on my side). Unfortunately I can't test this hypothesis quickly.

I just thought of that as I was booting up this morning, i'm running 64 bit, so could that be the problem? I'm also using nVIDIA btw.

 Fixed?

Just tried the violetman theme on my friend's computer, and everything's working fine. She's running 32-bit, so I guess that's the problem then. I'd prefere to use 32-bit myself, but the 32bit driver for my wireless card is a bit unstable :(

I should be able to compile and test a 64-bit version by the weekend.

Ok, a 64-bit version is now posted. I dug up an old hard-drive for a 64-bit install (before figuring out how to also enable 64-bit VM support). Long story short, I was able to replicate your problem using the old file and fix it with the new one.

See: http://www.ubuntu-art.org/content/show.php/Bluman+64-bit?content=87065

I thank you for the feedback.

Where can I get the source? I am running the intrepid beta and would like to try and recompile the bluman usplash because the current version does not work with intrepid (as far as I know).

I haven't yet started working on the defaults in Intrepid as things are still in flux there. I updated the usplash tarball with the source in a sub-directory. Good luck.

To get this one working with Intrepid, you have to compile it from source.

I am beginning to work on new versions based off of the files in Intrepid beta. I should be ready to post these when it advances to release candidate. I also plan on releasing the scripts I use to construct the themes.
