Description:

Currently the Amarok-2 layout is not exactly nice yet, the big horizontal bar at he top looks empty and seems lik wasted space, and the "play/pause/next/prev" panel looks lost in there.

Also I prefer having most of the controls at the bottom.

So here's my idea how the Amarok layout could be improved. It would be a compromise of space-efficiency and eye-candy.

This thing is mainly about the layout, not the design.

Now I've done a mockup, instead of the unpolular sketch. ;)

looks good except i am used to the way windows media player works and i would like to see a version of amarok look a little more like the windows player #11 that would be cool. you know make it look a little like bolth players have made a baby and the result was what ever come out.

Although I haven't used media-player for a while, being like media-player out of the box is a no-go for amarok, because amarok is a unique application. I can already see the trolls crawling out of the holes calling amarok a "media-player clone" ;)

 vertical sidebar?

I can't believe with the aesthetic of oxygen, and the usability issues discussed
we are still dealing with the vertical sidebar. I mean aside from the fact that people in general hardly ever read bottom to top on the y axis in other activities, as you pointed out the current layout offers more free space, and we're still mixing the two text orientations in one app layout? I love Amarok by the way, my stronger than "meh" feelings come from the fact that for me this is a killer KDE app.
If we are married to the sidebar, why can we not devote a little more lateral real estate to the tabs and make the like square-ish buttony things that can word wrap? I mean if the icons are good, most of the tab identification job should be done by them anyway.

Imo the vertical sidebar is a good thing, at least I haven't seen a good alternative until now. After all the vertical text is something you read only ONCE, and from then on you recognize it with a single glance. So I think it's not really a usability issue.

it looks like a good idea and really cool.

But i miss the equalizer and enough space to manage my playlist. i don't have enougn sapce by now and it seems like there are too much fields for stuff you don't need.

amarok is fat enougn by now!

new amarok layout really sucks, especially all that wasted space with plasma staff. Even on my 1680x1050 screen
