Description:

This mockup is meant to be a concept for a menu system which would combine the ideas behind the efficient KDE 3.x K Menu and the multi-functional Kickoff while providing visual integration with Plasma.

An explanation of the design:

- Favorite programs use larger icons and are located at the bottom for easy access.

- The folders for programs would operate in a similar manner as the traditional K Menu. To reduce the problem of wide, narrow rows, submenus would appear as close to the mouse cursor as possible without overlapping any text or content.

- Dimmed icons for different categories of the menu (pictured: Places, Recent Files, Information, and Power options) are shown surrounding the user\'s account picture. On mouse or keyboard focus, the relevant icon would be changed to its full brightness.

- On click, category buttons would change the main panel view to correspond with the option selected by the user. The default \"applications and favorites\" view could be restored by typing [Escape] or clicking on the user icon.

- The user\'s icon is shown at the top, along with their username. When hovering over a category icon, this text would change to reflect the content the user has focus on.

- Typing with the menu open would automatically start a search, while the main view could be restored by either clicking on the user icon or pressing [Escape].

Only one problem, im sure this mockup was shown prior to KDE 4.0 release but it wasnt approved by the devs. But good luck, it looks ultra-sexy and im digging the black.

 Not good

This menu type has same problems than kickoff, you cant keep it where you like and this isn't better when you have many applications. Everything is easy to do if user has 4-5 applications but think if user has 40-50 applications, how do you sort them here?

How this menu acts when it's moved to right/left side of bar or top bar?

How this many acts when it's just applet on desktop?

How about if user wants 5-10 favorites and not just 3?

I think we need better menu than kick off is, its good when just using favorites but all other menus are terrible, especially applications -menu....

I'm waiting Lancelot...

KDE is made for users by users....
What can you give back to others?

Thank you for your feedback on my menu proposal.

While this is still just a mockup, the menu would shrink the size of the favorite program icons as necessary. If a user wanted more favorites than the menu could easily fit in one row, it would either expand horizontally to accommodate the additional entries or use multiple rows.

On a panel positioned at the top of the screen, the menu would function as it does in the concept designs, except the user icon would be located at the bottom while the favorite programs would be positioned near the top.

I like Pinheiro's raptor idea better.
I like the idea of the menu being a horizontal line on the bottom. (or on top or vertical on left or right, depending on where the panel is, or even better, where user wants it to be)

it would look better if it looked more like a kbfx menu and that it can also use kbfx themes too. i would contact kbfx and propose this to them to make it easier to install there program on any disto like making rpms in 1386 and 64 bit format for all main distros.

Linux, surpass the best. Leave it to the rest.
