Description:

Fontmatrix is a graphical font manager for Linux. One thing where Fontmatrix has the older proprietary font managers beat is the concept of ‘tagging’. This makes it really nice to group fonts and even sub-group them logically for use in say a book.

It also has extensive support to give you a nice gui to show all the glyphs in a font, previews of sample text, variable sizing and also tell you what kinds of advanced Open Type features are inside the guts of your font. That is something I’ve never seen outside of a font editor. And not least, it creates a nice PDF catalogue of your fonts for printing or reference. All in all, a real pro’s font manager, but still nice and user friendly.

Changelog:

Compared to 0.4.2, almost everything is new. From the storage backend to the preview engine, all has been reworked to offer a better user experience and prepare exciting future developments. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of changes:

- SQLite database and a Python script to move data from old XML based DB
- Python scripting
- Independent samples directory (allowing easy sharing of this resource)
- Configurable shortcuts
- A text layout engine to display samples (including hyphenation)
- ICU, Harfbuzz and Fontmatrix's own shaper engines
- A playful playground
- PANOSE browser (experimental)
- New help system and user manual written from scratch
- Glyphs comparision panel
- Boolean operators in search filters
- File system browser for fonts
- Themable informations panel (CSS and JavaScript)
- Extract embedded fonts from PDF documents (experimental)
- Find font from an bitmap image (experimental)
- Expose, and possibly export, TrueType tables
- Edit tags

I do a lot of documents that need oddball fonts. I've collected over 4000 fonts. This will come in handy.

Thank you very much.

Debian and Ubuntu links go to the Scribus page... Are there DEBs for this?

Yes, the Scribus link takes you to the Scribus Debian/Ubuntu upstream repositories. These repositories are maintained by the Debian packager and include Lprof, Scribus and Fontmatrix - apps which are often used together.

You really need to work on the download links.

Yes, the ubuntu/debian leads to the scribus repository, but there is no way to get the newest release. Adding the repository to apt just gives you the latest official release (0.4.2-2 at this time) or, for unstable, the 0.5~svn2009515-1 version with broken dependency problems.

Clicking on the source link leads to the fontmatrix archives with 0.6.0 as the latest.

Where can I get the 0.6.1 source/deb?

Thanks.

Same problem, there is no Debian/Ubuntu package for users. This is a fake.

Is this project still alive? I wonder if there are news from it... Surely the best font manager for GNU/Linux and so...
