Description:

Ultra Series - 220 Color schemes pack (v3.2)

This is the final update for the Ultra series. This pack includes mostly non-generic schemes, fully compatible with Domino but also usable with Glow, Powder and Serenity.

Installation. Extract the content of the tarball to $home/.kde/share/apps/kdisplay/color-schemes.

Usability:

* Fonts. Besides the window decoration, the overall look depends mostly on the font combination you use, thus load some programs and try them out first. Alt+F2 -> colors. Select scheme, press Alt+A to try them.

* Backgrounds. Non-white background schemes. Each scheme displays a 3-column icon. The middle column represents the background color. Some applications, most noticeable Konqueror and OpenOffice, use this color for documents and webpages. If this is not the desired effect, this is how to fix it:

OpenOffice -> Options -> Appearance -> Document background.
Konqueror-> Configure -> CSS -> Use accessibility style-sheet -> Black on white.

* Button colors. These schemes are meant to be used primarily with a dark button/light text combination, Glow inherits this color by default, the same effect can be achieved by customizing Domino. As always, it all depends on what you like.

* Konqueror troubleshooting. Konqueror doesn't always display colors the way it should. An easy way to avoid complications is to use a background image instead of a color. I was careful with the integration between background colors and alternative background colors, (this is noticeable when you use programs with list-view modes: Amarok, Gwenview, Dolphin, Kget, etc.) nevertheless this is a limitation imposed by Konqueror and probably the main reason why some users tend to avoid darker schemes.

* Gamma correction. I use my monitor with a default 6500K/2.0 gamma setting, some non-calibrated monitors might require a slight adjustment in order to display properly the darker schemes.

KControl -> Peripherals -> Monitor & Display -> Color & Gamma.

Screenshots. Instead of cluttering the screen with all types of windows like I did in the past, I selected 2 of my favorites. I chose these ones in particular because for the average user they may look completely unusable at first, nevertheless, they are there for a reason. Which ones suit your style, it's up to you to decide.

Update (2008.07.10): Nitrofurano kindly ported the pack to Gnome and Fluxbox!:

Edit (06.2009): It's been over 8 months since my last visit here, is good to see this pack still on top, thanks everybody for their support, I really appreciate it.

Changelog:

2008.03.28. Final update, 63 schemes were retouched. I updated the screenshots.
2008.01.30. I added to the pack 135 color schemes, rewrote and expanded the description.
2008.01.24. 82 color schemes added, total of 85 plus the original scheme. Created pack, rewrote and expanded description, added new screenshots.
2008.01.09. I added the Dusk and Dawn schemes, updated the Dark Ocean scheme so more decorations can use it, modified the description and changed the screenshots #2 and #3.
2008.01.06. I re uploaded the schemes, updated the description, the screenshots and removed the old changelog, which was becoming unnecessarily messy.

It finally worked. Weird. I guess having sirius radio playing in the background is what was causing the problem. ?-)

Actually, the same happened to me twice today, kde-look seems slower than usual. Perhaps it has something to do with the redesigning of the site.

I'm glad you like them erko. I've put further updates on hold for the moment, mainly because everytime I upgrade this page rating drops down for no reason. Right now the whole pack is rated lower than the original scheme, that doesn't make any sense, not to mention it can be misleading. I'm first to admit that they are not meant for everyone, but at the same time, not everyone here votes with the same intentions, is not the first time it happens. It takes a lot of time to do things properly, also, updating often has proven to be highly counter-productive as well. I think it's better than keep people waiting for one year for the next update, but obviously some people don't like this approach. I've seen an user requesting people to vote bad on someone else's wallpaper because it was on the first page for too long, that's lame and insulting to that poor guy who took that photo. I think that sums it up. So, if you find them useful please vote.

First of all, I'd like to thank the ones that voted, I really appreciate it. I've been testing some new schemes that will take part of the next upgrade, so if anyone has requests now is the time. And I apologize for the following but I really feel the need to explain myself better. All my work can be considered as a work in progress, not because is unfinished but because there's always room for improvements and enhancements. Leaving an outdated version here when I got a better one already is against my way of doing things. Unfortunately some people consider this overexposure and vote bad whenever I update something. After two upgrades, someone voted bad right after the upload, the number of downloads didn't change; so what did they rate? the screenshots? That's the only thing that annoyed me. As for the other case I mentioned, after a closer inspection of that page, I realized that I misinterpreted the situation so I'd like to take my words back: some users seem to update their contents when they haven't changed anything at all. The situation here is obviously quite different, upgrades are significant, nonetheless I can truly understand why upgrading often can bother some people. So, unless someone else has a better idea, I'll try to leave at least a month or so gap between each update.

can you also include the domino config you use? I cant find a dark color that work for buttons, thanks.
Also, you should stick to domino and kde3, oxygen doesn't let you configure anything really :(, google for arstechnica kde4 review.

You don't need to use black/dark buttons, I use them simply because they work with any scheme of the pack, but you can achieve a readable button using combinations of dark and light grey:

For lighter schemes: (001, 057, 115, etc)

first gradient (0-50) #C7C6C5 to #A1A09F
second gradient (50-100) #91908F to #F5F4F4
background color #FCFCFC

You can also select a contour color for them, #353535 for instance. If you like a particular scheme and want to get the best of it using Domino you can borrow the colors from the scheme. An example, choose 057, now adjust Domino,

first gradient (0-50) #C7C6C5 to #787E89
second gradient (50-100) #787E89 to #666C77
background color #FCFCFC
contour color #353535

The final result looks great, that's why I chose this decoration over others.

Sorry, I forgot to add the one I used for those screenshots, (0-50) #323231 to #292928, (50-100) #292928 to #2D2D2C , background #686866. The next update will include some light button+black text schemes too.

 Icons on kmenu

How did you remove the icons from kmenu? I did it by changing the number to -1 in kickerrc but there are still a space on the left where the icons were? How do I make it looks like yours?

Hi, you're everywhere aren't you? ;) I simply adjusted Domino

Kcontrol -> Style -> Domino -> Configure -> General -> Indent menu items.

IIRC, it can be adjusted even more.

Yeah, I could recognize the window decoration and the sliders looked like domino, but your buttons look more similar to polyester. Could you share your domino config, please?

Hi, I could but it wouldn't be of much use to anybody since I'm using a custom coded Domino. Nevertheless, a similar effect can be achieved by going to General -> Button height adjustment -> -5px. This makes buttons a lot thinner, even thinner than polyester's. I hope that's what you were looking for.
