Description:

Ultra Series - 220 Color schemes pack (v3.2)

This is the final update for the Ultra series. This pack includes mostly non-generic schemes, fully compatible with Domino but also usable with Glow, Powder and Serenity.

Installation. Extract the content of the tarball to $home/.kde/share/apps/kdisplay/color-schemes.

Usability:

* Fonts. Besides the window decoration, the overall look depends mostly on the font combination you use, thus load some programs and try them out first. Alt+F2 -> colors. Select scheme, press Alt+A to try them.

* Backgrounds. Non-white background schemes. Each scheme displays a 3-column icon. The middle column represents the background color. Some applications, most noticeable Konqueror and OpenOffice, use this color for documents and webpages. If this is not the desired effect, this is how to fix it:

OpenOffice -> Options -> Appearance -> Document background.
Konqueror-> Configure -> CSS -> Use accessibility style-sheet -> Black on white.

* Button colors. These schemes are meant to be used primarily with a dark button/light text combination, Glow inherits this color by default, the same effect can be achieved by customizing Domino. As always, it all depends on what you like.

* Konqueror troubleshooting. Konqueror doesn't always display colors the way it should. An easy way to avoid complications is to use a background image instead of a color. I was careful with the integration between background colors and alternative background colors, (this is noticeable when you use programs with list-view modes: Amarok, Gwenview, Dolphin, Kget, etc.) nevertheless this is a limitation imposed by Konqueror and probably the main reason why some users tend to avoid darker schemes.

* Gamma correction. I use my monitor with a default 6500K/2.0 gamma setting, some non-calibrated monitors might require a slight adjustment in order to display properly the darker schemes.

KControl -> Peripherals -> Monitor & Display -> Color & Gamma.

Screenshots. Instead of cluttering the screen with all types of windows like I did in the past, I selected 2 of my favorites. I chose these ones in particular because for the average user they may look completely unusable at first, nevertheless, they are there for a reason. Which ones suit your style, it's up to you to decide.

Update (2008.07.10): Nitrofurano kindly ported the pack to Gnome and Fluxbox!:

Edit (06.2009): It's been over 8 months since my last visit here, is good to see this pack still on top, thanks everybody for their support, I really appreciate it.

Changelog:

2008.03.28. Final update, 63 schemes were retouched. I updated the screenshots.
2008.01.30. I added to the pack 135 color schemes, rewrote and expanded the description.
2008.01.24. 82 color schemes added, total of 85 plus the original scheme. Created pack, rewrote and expanded description, added new screenshots.
2008.01.09. I added the Dusk and Dawn schemes, updated the Dark Ocean scheme so more decorations can use it, modified the description and changed the screenshots #2 and #3.
2008.01.06. I re uploaded the schemes, updated the description, the screenshots and removed the old changelog, which was becoming unnecessarily messy.

I'm glad you liked it. At the moment, I got almost 300 schemes, and the list keeps growing fast. Just need some time to sort them out and do things properly. Such a large quantity can be counter-productive, so I'll try to be selective. As usual, the longer it takes, the better the final result.

are you using kubuntu?
View --> Configure Background --> Color --> ✓ Default Color

(If I remember correctly then this is kubuntu's bug)

Technically is not a bug, simply the application overriding the scheme. Background and alternative background colors are meant to be used by any application that uses list-view modes. But you said some interesting, I don't have any default color checkbox...that's intriguing.

Try the following experience: load Konqueror (text-view or detailed-list view modes), Amarok, Gwenview (detailed-view), Dolphin (details), KGet or any program that uses list-view modes.

Load these schemes: 001, 003, 004. Unlike the other programs, if you use Konqueror with a background picture, the list doesn't respond to these colors, something relatively obvious actually.

Now, instead of using a background picture, use a color, pick whichever for that matter. This color will override the alternate background color even for KDE's default schemes. If you use similar schemes you can just set one that matches once and be done with it. If you are like me and use radically different schemes during the day, well it can very distracting.

Curiously, Konqueror's image-view mode doesn't have this problem at all, it behaves the way it should. I don't know exactly how Konqueror was ensambled, but this issue looks a lot like an implementation limitation. For instance, Amarok let's you inherit and override the color scheme, not one color but two. If this is either some remanent of older codes or a designer approach that was dropped, I honesly don't have any clue.

The simplest way to avoid this hassle is just to use a white background picture and black text. Most of the time I use Dolphin, so is not such a big deal to me. But since so many people really depend on Konqueror I'd like to know if this problem is reproduceable and if it solely affects Kubuntu users.

Yes, this is where the problem happens. Any color you choose there will override the default background list. By default I thought you meant an option to inherit KDE scheme like the one Amarok has: Amarok -> Configure -> Appearance -> Color scheme. If you could have the exact same thing with Konqueror then there wouldn't be any problems whatsoever.

Like I said, this problem arises if you use -radically- different schemes during the day, an average user will hardly ever notice this. The reason is simple, white is the default color, most schemes out there are meant to use this color. You can replicate this problem using KDE's CDE and DigitalCDE. One stripe white, the next one the background color. If you modify this white color to match that particular scheme, the problem will emerge again if you switch to another scheme. I use solely Kubuntu, I used KDE with Mandrake years ago and I don't remember this problem. Then again, it was a much more primitive version of Konqueror.

If you're unable to reproduce this problem, then it could mean that it affects only a limited amount of users. That would be a relief.

well actually if you tick "Default color" it won't be white, but the value of "background=*" defined by active color scheme - you have to do it every time in kubuntu while changing color scheme that uses different "background=*" than previous one.

I found out how to fix this annoyance:
close konqueror, open "$HOME/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc" file and edit the following to look like this -
[Settings]
BgColor=
BgImage=
- now background color will be updated according to color scheme settings in kcontrol

First of all, I'd like to thank you for your feedback suzhou, most people usually don't bother to go this far. In my case a blank background setting equals 255,255,255. That's why I said white was default. If after this fix you can achieve the same effect Amarok or any list-view application shows, without fixing the background everytime, then there's no need to look further, this is likely a bug. Period. Perhaps is just me and no else bothers about it. I try to give the best everytime and not having control over something so elemental really really annoys me. It's a pity.

 Solved

That solution suzhou proposed actually works, just needs an extra step. Unlike other applications Konqueror needs to be closed and restarted, after you change the scheme, this way it reloads the scheme by itself. You don't need to change the background manually every time anymore. I don't know how relevant it is for this problem but I changed the number of preloaded instances to 0. I'll add this fix on the next update.

didn't I say exactly that (to close konqueror) before editing $HOME/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc file?

oh wait, nevermind I get your point. (even if $HOME/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc has been edited, new color scheme settings will be applied after you quit konqueror and start it again, unlike amarok for example)

 Looking for a script

Not exactly the right place to ask this question but, I was wondering if anyone here knows how to achieve the following: I want to create a small application (QT3/C++ or Python script) that allows me to randomly change the color scheme. I know for a fact that you can change the style (although not the decoration) using DCOP, I've done that already. But the color module (kcmshell colors) doesn't seem to be fully accesible. I think a small kicker applet or a Karamba widget would be really nice. If it's doable I'd like to give it a shot. :)

forgot one thing: the schemes are stored at /usr/share/apps/kdisplay/color-schemes, at least in my installation.

I've installed the latest sidux version (sidux.com, give it a chance pls!) and renamed the home/.kde directory after i messed it up. the old schemes are in home/.kde_renamed/and/so/on, but the newer ones (after renaming) are in the directory mentioned above!

Is this ordinary?

Anyway, I appreciate the fact that you made o good content for kde-look.org!

But if your favorite is OuterSpace, then you're talking to the wrong guy, I never made any scheme with that name lol :o

I also have some default schemes at /usr/share/apps/kdisplay/color-schemes/. This is the default path and affects all users. I'm not familiar with that problem, the only information I could find is here:

help:/khelpcenter/userguide/directory-layout.html
help:/khelpcenter/userguide/system-locations.html

Thank you for your comments :)

Since you mentioned this, I'd love to see some screenshots made by you guys. It is always interesting to see some derivated work. I couldn't test them with some styles because either my card doesn't fully support them (Beryl/Compiz), or I haven't been able to compile them yet.

Every time I click the download link firefox freezes up. I'm so confused. I have version 2.0.0.11. Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm able to download other files without a problem.
