Description:

Darker Ice is a darker advancement of the Dark Ice theme. Please download this theme and share with others. If you notice anything that looks out of place or if you have any improvements to offer, please feel free to contact me or comment below.

Thanks again to AnsheShem, the creator of the original Dark Ice, for the inspiration. I've also included a metacity theme with permission from wbw called Dark-Ice-Divinorum. Much thanks to wbw for their excellent work! http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=71512

This is my first GTK theme.

This theme package includes:

  • 1 Gtk2 theme called Darker Ice

  • 3 Metacity themes for use with Darker Ice. The original Dark-Ice from AnsheShem, Dark-Ice Colors with colored-on-hover metacity buttons, as well as Dark-Ice-Divinorum, supplied by the talented wbw.

  • 2 Emerald themes, Dark-Ice and Dark-Ice Colors

  • Changelog:

    0.4 - Initial beta - comments or questions welcomed.

    0.5 - Fixed some color issues and took a first shot at the scrollbars. How do they look?

    0.5.5 - Fixed the desktop highlighting as suggested by arialis111. We don't need no stinkin' menu-arrows. Just kidding. I'll fix that in the next release. Have a better panel-bg? Suggest it! Make it! Submit it!

    0.6 - Nicer scrollbars are here!

    0.9 - Fixed a lot of nasty things in this update. I've removed the system specified panel and supplied you with one in the Darker Ice.tar.gz folder to specify in the panel properties. New check and radio boxes have been added. Menus now have arrows.

    0.9.5 - Fixed a couple of text colors that were bugging some people. Created new panel background that matches the rest of the theme better. We're almost to 1.0! Please let me know of any bugs or usability issues you run into with this version!

    0.9.6 - Added 2 metacity themes that include colored hover buttons.

    0.9.7 - Removed previous metacity themes because they sucked. Added Dark-Ice Colors and Dark-Ice-Divinorum metacity themes. Added Dark-Ice Colors emerald theme. 1 or 2 other random fixes.

    0.9.9 - Fixed a few things that I didn't really like, including sliders and progress-bars. I hope this theme is usable for everybody with most applications. There is one thing that is bothering me and that is that GtkCombos appear blue. I've looked everywhere for something that may be causing this, but I haven't yet figured it out. Please let me know if you can take a few minutes to look at my gtkrc. This bug is not in the original Dark-Ice which makes it even weirder. Enjoy.

    1! - Ok, I'm proud to announce Darker Ice 1. A Dark theme that is, as far as I know, completely usable. Special thanks to AnsheShem, wbw, and others who have helped my first gtk theme become complete. Thanks also to the 10,000 of you that have downloaded it.

    1.01 Copied Milentije's fixes in from the comments. Also added one fix of my own. This theme still looks stunning. Almost 30000 downloads and counting.

    1.5 - better fixes for the problems described in the comments. Please enjoy Darker Ice under the GPL and consider purchasing this theme if you actually enjoy using it. Please do not whine, because purchase or donation are entirely OPTIONAL. Support your artists! http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

    1.6 - Fixed the checkbox bug.

    1.7 - Made things prettier and adjusted some text colors.

    1.8 - Fixed (hopefully) some text things that were bugging everyone. If you have a problem take a screenshot for me.

     bright text problem.

    i've been undergoing same problem above.

    here's a fix for that.

    >vi ~/.themes/DarkerIce/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

    and edit some lines,

    fg[XXXXX] = "#XXXXXX"

    in my case, i could see text distinguishable after editing these two lines below,

    fg[NORMAL] = "#8C8C8C"
    fg[ACTIVE] = "#8C8C8C"

    default text coloring is too whity (#D7D7D7), so edit this to some more darker color (#8C8C8C).

    hope this will help you.

     Text problem too!

    I have some problem with MPlayer and aMule. When I'm browsing on one of them, the text is in light blue (yes, I know there is no light blue font in this theme) and the bg is white. When I select something, the font becomes white and the bg is some darkblue. This problem doesn't occur with other themes (at least not with Human). I searched this theme gtkrc, but couldn't find any blueish color, just grayish. So, if anyone has experienced this same problem and can help me, I would appreciate.

    Thx in advanced.

    ps: Sorry about the english!

     Light text problem

    Here's another kind of fix for the light text problem. Instead of making the text darker, I chose to make the background dark grey.

    Here are my changes:

    in the file ~/.themes/DarkerIce/gtk-2.0/gtkrc locate the lines that read:

    base[NORMAL] = "#ffffff" # Background, most
    base[ACTIVE] = "#373737" # Menu active item in inactive window
    base[PRELIGHT] = "#373737"
    base[INSENSITIVE] = "#818181" # Inactive Entry bg
    base[SELECTED] = "#818181" # Menu active item in active window

    text[NORMAL] = "#000000" # Text in window, arrows
    text[INSENSITIVE] = "#000000" # Insensitive arrows
    text[SELECTED] = "#000000" # Active text in active window
    text[ACTIVE] = "#ffffff" # Active text in inactive window
    text[PRELIGHT] = "#ffffff" # Text on Mouseover

    (they are around lines 50-70). Now replace those two block with the following:

    base[NORMAL] = "#252525" # Background, most
    base[ACTIVE] = "#373737" # Menu active item in inactive window
    base[PRELIGHT] = "#373737"
    base[INSENSITIVE] = "#818181" # Inactive Entry bg
    base[SELECTED] = "#818181" # Menu active item in active window

    text[NORMAL] = "#D7D7D7" # Text in window, arrows
    text[INSENSITIVE] = "#D7D7D7" # Insensitive arrows
    text[SELECTED] = "#D7D7D7" # Active text in active window
    text[ACTIVE] = "#ffffff" # Active text in inactive window
    text[PRELIGHT] = "#ffffff" # Text on Mouseover

    This will make the background of most stuff dark grey.

    Here is another solution. It`s little brighter.

    base[NORMAL] = "#525252" # Background, most
    base[ACTIVE] = "#525252" # Menu active item in inactive window
    base[PRELIGHT] = "#525252"
    base[INSENSITIVE] = "#6B6B6B" # Inactive Entry bg
    base[SELECTED] = "#6B6B6B" # Menu active item in active window

    text[NORMAL] = "#808080" # Text in window, arrows
    text[INSENSITIVE] = "#808080" # Insensitive arrows
    text[SELECTED] = "#808080" # Active text in active window
    text[ACTIVE] = "#ffffff" # Active text in inactive window
    text[PRELIGHT] = "#ffffff" # Text on Mouseover

    base[PRELIGHT] = "#434343"
    base[INSENSITIVE] = "#616161" # Inactive Entry bg
    base[SELECTED] = "#616161" # Menu active item in active window

    text[NORMAL] = "#808080" # Text in window, arrows

     2 Issues

    I love this theme, plain and simple. There are two things I've found that I want to point out, if anyone has a good way to fix them.

    1. The handles for the range widgets are missing the rightmost(for horizontal) or topmost(for vertical) row of pixels, making it lose the black border.

    2. Buttons don't appear any different when they are selected by tabbing through. I tried to fix this one, but I couldn't find what state goes along with this.

    thank you for this awesome looking desktop!

    ...but how do you get the arrows (for navigation, forward-back-up) in Nautilus changed? they remain like previous set theme... (so not the shiny new ones like in your preview pic...)

    you seem to have dark ice icons for folders too? can't select those either...

    also, the programs on the bottom panel are not separated (like with a vertical line)...
    can this be changed, so they look clearly separate instead of like 1 bar ?

    thanks for any help/info
    (I'm running Ubuntu)

    take care!

    thx !
