Description:

The Issue: When I copy or move content to a removable drive, it may fill up without the whole being copied.

Currently konqueror or dolphin would show an extra dialog with 3 buttons, See 1st Screenshot with Cancel, Skip and AutoSkip.

In a disk full state all buttons work similarly (Actually Skip would skip the copy or move till a smaller file which can be copied is obtained, So in general you would be more interested to cancel the operation and try other means like compress it or get some files deleted at destination). In other cases Skipping would result in something you had never wished for.

My proposal is to add an extra button Rollback. The rollback would delete the copied items in case of a copy failure leaving the destination unaltered. It would revert back all the files moved in the case of a move.

I was thinking to ask for another button Retry like in windows but it may be bit overcrowded for the error dialog. Obviously many users will try again from start.

Asking for another piece of indulgence. Developers! are you hearing?

Kindly comment what do you feel!

Changelog:

31-July-2007
Added 3rd Screenshot as a warning before copying about the destination not having sufficient space.
Changed 2nd Screenshot to add Continue.
The download file contain old proposal.
Still the dialog does not look polished, However that is all required for now.

Posted a Feature request vide Bug 148429: Requested Rollback and Continue in Copy / Move dialog http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148429

Everybody interested in improving the dialog kindly vote for it.

I like it.
I'd like to have a "continue" button as well.
When I copy some things from CD to my harddisk I and get this message I have no chance to get rid of some old data to continue the copying. I have to abort and begin all over again...

That's it. What is usability? minimize clicks, repetitions, allow for more options and not over-clutter and we are not asking for more.
--Thanks!

Actually, I'd find very fascinating if KDE would "queue" the failed copy operation.

In the notification area, a stack in the tasks notify may inform the user that once space becomes available again, the requested file copy/move will happen.

Maybe there's no need to issue a file copy / solve a problem -eventually- / re-issue the file copy anymore.

A pending tasks like thing? It can be taken to a next level altogether. Possibly an other mockup. Anyways we probably agree that we need more from the move / copy dialog.

None by the moment

Instead of this, Dolphin should calculate the remain space before start copying something.

It should be just a window whit one option:

File(s)are bigger than the remaining disk space, can't continue.

Acept.

"Instead" is not the right way. The partition can fill up with other data than the copied one.
Also it would be nice to have a "continue anyway" button. When I have a slow download I have enough time to get more free space while the download continues.

Well!,
Think again? If two different programs are filling up disk space, our dear copy and some other program, then calculating free space won't be beneficial. It can show a warning before copying for little space left on target.

Good thinking!
Yes, the mockup is shaping up! Any other ideas?

Well, I know this is a tall order and it should have been in the works months ago to make it for kde 4.0 (but theres always 4.1)

However, if we stipulate that all programs that are moving large amounts of data around the computer are kde-freindly programs, then the programs could collectively keep track of how much space they intend to write. Now, this is not a guarentee, but its a nice feature. I think that the dialog should pop up first when dolphin detects that there is not enough space, and have 3 options:

--Try anyway
--Wait until I appear to have enough space
--Give up

Then, when a file transfer is in progress and it appears that its not going to complete, dolphin would put up a similar dialog. I'm not sure if I like the idea of a roll back... theres an element of risk of data loss... but we'll see.

 suggest it

You should suggest this to the dolphin authors, maybe also to the Konqi/KIO ppl... find their mailinglist, subscribe, send an email with a description, the mockups, a link to this topic and maybe (if one exists) a link to a bugreport/wishlist from bugs.kde.org, asking for this. If no bug/wish exists, it might be smart to make one, so you can track progress. Posting your mockup etc there, of course.
