Description:

Log in, log out and switch off are sometimes a task a bit messy and annoying (of course) in a KDE multi-user system. I'll explain why in detail,
....................................

"DISCLAIMER": First of all, I'm a HOME KDE USER and not a developer. I've no idea of coding. Furthermore, I may be proposing some features that actually exists but I ignore and I may confuse technical names and "engines".
----------------------------------------

My proposal is fruit of the experience using KDE. I administer my computer (user 1); two more people use it . One of those, my sister, used Windows until I made her try Linux (now she doesn't want to try Windows, ;) ). She (u2) used Mac for some time, The other (u3) has some troubles with computing and regularly uses Windows (but recognises Linux as easier lo navigate and so on). We are all over 20 yr. So, three kind of users. From a Linux-convert to a Windows boy.

Usually I have at the same time 2 sessions opened: I use password for my session, my sister not. So we jump a lot from one session to another. So, if the screen is locked to open or change the session you must do "change user"> "activate">"(log in)" or "change user"> "new session"> "KDM"> "log in". Not very straight forward and really hard to explain to the user 3! Especially nnoyin for u2.

Again, if you want to switch off the computer (you know for sure that's not going to be used but one session is open) is not just switch off but "switch off" and "confirm" you want to close that session. Not very straight forward, innit?.

(I ask for feedback from user 2 and user 3 to prepare this proposal, lol.)

....................................

So, my proposal goes in the way of having a KDM, lock screen, switch off an so on reunited. The major proposals are:

1. Hability to close a session without having to log in.

2. Same look for the system and sessions management

3. More interactive KDM/session manager: mail, IM messages, task to do from basket, office documents opened and so on (user may determine this parameters) shown in KDE/session manager

If you look through the mock-up (not the screenshoot but the download!) I've made you are going to see what I'm talking about. First of all, the artwork is from Oxygen project; I just grabbed the icons to made something fast. Due to this I used the same icon for rebooting and change user.

...............................
Mock-up explanation:

User names are displayed in column. Right side icons show the session state: logged (locked/unlocked) & not logged. Left icons belong to two groups: session killer (click in the button to close a session without login in) and events: mails, IM messages, task to do....

Hovering the mouse over//clicking in one user may show the password field (if mandatory), a button to change the session type, the button to close the session if active and a button to cancel. In case no password is set the log in process should be direct. Over the user image "active" icons may be displayed, as session state, events (ie. hovering over IM message show that there's 2 messages...). Showing events may be useful for a 3th person to determine if he can close another's sessions; ie. if the event shows that there's office apps opened or IM messages received he may decide not to switch off the computer.

At the bottom of the KDM/session manager wide system options are shown: reboot, switch off...

Finally, when the system is going to be closed, actives user could be listed in the same window and give the option to closes the session at that very moment (and not 30 second after, when probably the user have left the desktop). [One personal experience: I've left the computer working stupidly all night a lot of times because I thought I had switch off the computer but another's session were opened so the PC passes all night asking nobody to close another's session. (Annoying!)]
---------------------------------

SO, that's it!. Please, comment!. What features I propose you liek the most and which are ruchish?. Please, Vote but comment too!.

Ouch! a lot of "gaga"
(English translation of what I have think when I have saw the picture)

Your idea are not bad but the window are small and you have but a lut of function. It look like Grande Allée street during the national birthday of Québec.

If you reorganize the window it will be better.

I thought as well that so many buttons would lead to confusion. I may have to think it over.

To me, KDM current state is a big obstacle for some user, that don't know what to do "if" one user is already logged and so on. So, all the stuff in the mock up is necessary if "powerful" option are to be kept and if the problem is solved.

I'm surprised I hadn't received more feedback to the idea: I'm glad you had answered.
