Description:

I took this idea (slightly modified) from this bug report : http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76082 (it's about smooth scrolling in all apps)

=================================
When the user scroll up or down, a horizontal line appears for a few seconds where the old bottom or the old top of the page was, then fades away. So when you're reading long sections of text, your eye can quickly scan to where you left off.
=================================

See the flash mockup here : http://danakil.free.fr/linux/Mockups/scrollmarker/kdescrollmarker.html

Note: there is an animated gif in the same directory but please use the flash movie if you can (the gif is bad quality and is 6200 ko !)

The second image shows an other possible feature for the scrollbars (quite similar to kate's bookmarks). I think it could be very convenient when reading very long pages like tutorial or API documentation

I can already imagine my KDE addicted grandmother switching to Windows and, when scrolling on her web browser, saying : "hey, where is the small red line ! Give me my KDE back !!"

huhu :)

...fashion way to use spacebar when reading long pages? It moves page so you always can continue reading easily.

This is great idea what should be implented...

KDE it just must be...

I was always highlighting text to do this and then scrolling. It never crossed my mind to actually demonstrate a proper solution. Bravo Bravo.

This is age old.
gv for example has this (when you use spacebar) and I think I've seen this in other apps of comparable age.
But it's a good idea to spread this feature to newer apps and combine it with the scrollbar.

 Gradient?

I like your proposition.

But instead of putting a red line, not very beautiful and possibly with an harming color, I propose to "fade out" the previously hidden zone, with a gray gradient, shadow-like:

http://slaout.linux62.org/kde-wishs/scrollbar-marker-gradient.png

This looks more seamless and fit better with the content.

It looks like a perfectly-integrated Mac OS X effect.

Yes, this is less visible than the red line, but I think it's not bad: since it comes from the border of the previously-hidden zone, it's easily visible: eyes are already there. And it's more an help than an intrusive thing.

What do you think about it?

1) There is an open bug requesting this feature in KDE:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93196

2) Opera has this feature:
