Description:

This little script is just a very basic, 1-click alarm clock. You set the number of minutes and at that time a sound (which you need to set) will be played. No application is started, the sound is played through the aplay command, so it's independent from the player you have installed.

** Why?? **

I know there are tons of much better alarm clocks out there. In fact, this is not supposed to be an alarm clock. It's just a sort of kitchen timer, for computer addicted.

My problem was that i was burning all my food (kinda following, too literally, what Usher says in his song "Let it burn!").
After throwing something in the oven or putting on the cookers i use to go back working on the PC and every time i forget about the food. I can't be bother to set a "full alarm clock", need something REALLY fast that reminds me about the food just some minutes later (and if possible i prefer that such reminder is not the horn of the firemen coming to extinguish the fire i caused :P )

** Installation **

Place dont_let_it_burn.desktop in /home/YOUR_USERNAME/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus
Place dont_let_it_burn.sh in /home/YOUR_USERNAME/bin
Place dont_let_it_burn.au in /home/YOUR_USERNAME/bin

IMPORTANT: you need to point to a valid audio file, supported bu the aplay command (wav or au for example). I have included a small sample file, dont_let_it_burn.au, if you place it in the bin directory then you dont need to do anything else. If you want another file just modify dont_let_it_burn.sh setting a valid path in the variable FULL_PATH_TO_AUDIO_FILE

I'll give this service menu a try, it seems I'm in your same situation ;)
maybe you could rename it to "kitchen not on fire" :PP

Hey, ever stumbled over an applet called 'KTeatime'? It is providing pretty much the same function, also in a lightweighted way. Also it's easy enough to modify preset-times and -names (like Pizza » 15 Minutes, Tofu-Lasagna » 35 Minutes or whatever (instead of 'Earl Grey')). You can even set the alarm-soundfile. Shouldn't be too much of a hassle getting rid of the teacup-trayicon as well and replace it with a tofu-lasagna-icon. Or something.

thanks for the info, had never heard of that application. I checked it out now googling its name.
It's actually completely different from my servicemenu script.
Personally i dont even think its worth installing a featured appl only for a few minutes reminder. As i said i'm aware of many better alarm clocks out there, but i wanted a 1-click thingy. This, for my own convenience: i uploaded it here but wrote it for myself (writing that script took something like 50 seconds).
So if someone is looking for more featured things, this service menu is simply not for him/her

I use KTeaTime for various alarm tasks and I like it a lot. I think that's the only application from KDE that I've been using from day one without stopping. I switched editors (gvim, kate, kwrite, emacs, ...), and I switched browsers (firefox & konqueror), and I switched mail clients (kmail/kontact, thunderbird, evolution, pine, ...), and I switched most of other things (kwin, compiz, beryl, for example, kxdocker & kicker, for another example). But I always used KTeaTime :) And I've been using KDE for about one decade (probably a few years less, I'm not sure now).

I guess it would be nice if kteatime had configurable icons and if it grew up in the general alarm application, not just the tea cooking one. It doesn't sound right when it writes "Tea burek is ready" (where burek is sort of a Serbian cheese or meat pie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burek#Serbian_.28round.29burek).

from that name, i thought its a service menu to tag folders you dont want to accidentally burn to a CD with k3b. like giving a cd with videos and accidentally including a xxx collection ;)

hahahaha LOL, i didn't think about that double meaning but yeah your totally right, and actually associating a service menu with cooking and burning food is not that obvious :D

I got the title from Usher's song "Let it burn"... which actually refers to yet another context and meaning

 Visual alarm

A visual alarm addition would be useful for me. I have another service menu script to alert me visually with "kuickshow something.jpg" when a video file is finally finished encoding. I made a jpg that says, "Video finished!" That's only because I don't know anything about making messages pop up in KDE ;-)

This way I don't risk not hearing an alarm sound. Sometimes my audio is switched to my headphones, but I'm not wearing the headphones. Or my speakers are turned off, and I'm unaware of it.
