DialogBoxes - A unified System for GUIs!

Description:

I think a unified system for file load/save dialog-boxes (but also for other dialogs) would be a good idea for KDE4.
Dialog-Boxes should have ONE look in all applications, independent of the different programs. This is not a problem of KDE, but of all Linux-GUIs.
e.g. : When a user switches from Windows to Linux, he is confronted with so many different-looking dialog-boxes, he must have the impression that this system is some kind of "patched" together in a confusing way.

I know, this "problem" can't be corrected directly by the Desktop Environment, because it's written in the different programs. But it would be a really great improvement, if KDE and GNOME would work together here and develop a really intuitive dialog-box system for the user. Maybe there could be a workaround then for other programs (e.g. xmms, opera) to "grab" their dialog-boxes, hide them and display a normal one instead. The content must then be transferred into the hidden ones.

What is NOT part of this brainstorming: How should this dialog-boxes look like?
Well I think there are good ideas already out there. For example the GNOME-Way with the clickable folders.
Also have a look at the ideas for navigation-bars here:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/%22Navigation+Bar+Reloaded%22?content=40135
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Clickable+slashes+in+path+bar(filemanag)?content=35637
Maybe the dialogs could include such a bar...

But MOST IMPORTANT: It should really be a unified system, the GNOME-dialogs should not look much different, so a "real" dialogue between the kde-folks and the gnome people should start!

I really hope for the whole linux-world that some day KDE nad GNOME will find a way together here! I've heard of improvements in working together last year. Well if that weren't empty promises, a unified dialog-system could have a chance.

 nice thought but

Thing is that kde and gnome actually have different ways to approach that. I banned all gtk apps a long time ago on my PC cause this stupid gnome behaviour.

sounds easy, but it isn't: the x11-GUIs have to find a way together, not to "fight" against each other. we shoul not ban any application only because it was made with the "wrong" toolkit. how can the linux-desktops ever have a chance against windows, when they fight against each other?

Sounds good. Wouldnt it be wise for X11/GNOME/KDE devs to implement a 'common dialogue' component, and then have that component point (or maybe even symlink) to either KDE or GNOME dialogues depending on how it's configured? Certainly this can't be that hard for very common dialogue types such as open and save.

some work is/has been going on in that area, the portland project wants to do this. http://portland.freedesktop.org/wiki/

There are on this site also patches to let gnome apps use the KDE file open dialog.

A common dialog for both desktops - FORGET about it. The KDE hackers think the current gnome file open dialog sucks balls, and the Gnomes think the KDE one sucks balls. They won't come to a common solution, really. You can't both empower people AND dumb down the interface, so KDE & Gnome won't work together on this.

 KGTK

Let's just hope that KGTK is ported over and the problem will continue to be a problem for Gnomies and a non-issue for KDE people.

 DBUS

It's actually quite easy to do if we call system dialogs as a service through DBUS. Then each desktop environment can deploy it's own implementation.

I guess the only problem is that we need to change a lot to make this work and not only in KDE but in all DEs.

I see the problem between gtk and qt applications.
Would it be possible to make some sort of API where an application desiring to browse the content of the computer would simply trigger a "system window", passing the handling to the current environement, kde, or gnome for instance.

I know nothing about programming under linux environements, so excuse me if my thinking makes absolutely no sense.
