Description:

Notice: I am preparing a universal graphical installer in order to be able to install it as a regular app (accessible via K-menu, with it's own icon), so check back again soon!

ReKordmydesktop is a frontend to recordmydesktop aiming at the ease of use.

If I have to give one simple instruction, then it is that you don't have to go beyond the first tab (Common Settings) unless you now what you want! Encoding and advanced settings are there because someone may need them, not because they are necessary for a good capture!

I believe programs like recordmydesktop are very important for the Linux desktop, especially when they come with a friendly yet powerful gui. A user can use them to create presentations, visual guides and demos more illustrative and impressive than ever before. An important ally to that task is the theora encoder which delivers superb quality video while keeping a low bitrate. At top of that the ogg format ensures that the produced file is suitable for streaming.

I did my best to implement all the functionality provided by recordmydesktop
plus some enhancements:
- Click and grab a specific window to capture it.
- Straightforward use of pause.
- Added timed capture. It can be stopped or paused of course.
- Most settings available through checkboxes or sliders.
- Offers the option to open the resulted video when the recording ends with your
favorite player.
- It remembers your settings so you don't need to set them every time.

ReKordmydesktop requires from you to have installed on your system:
- recordmydesktop
- kommander (Usually comes with KDE.)
- xwininfo (Although not necessery it is recommended. It is used to determine by
a single click a specific window to capture).

Some hints:
- If you choose to grab a specific window don't forget to use the "grab window"
button prior the recording!
- ReKordmydesktop can understand all error codes produced by recordmydesktop and
will show them at the StatusBar if they occur.
- ReKordmydesktop isn't designed to interact with many instances of
recordmydesktop running simultaneously. The program itself will protect you
from that. You can trick it by starting a recording through the program's
interface and then starting a second, parallel recording from the command
line. I discourage it strongly though.
- If you are wondering why mplayer and vlc don't appear on the players' list, I
couldn't make them start without freezing reKordmydesktop for as long as they
are running. I didn't want such behaviour in my program.
ReKordmydesktop will detect Kaffeine, xine, totem, noatun, Kaboodle, Kmplayer,
Kplayer, codeine, ffplay.
- If you think reKordmydesktop takes too much time to start or close you are
probably right. That happens because it reads/saves your settings.
- I did my best but some bugs may have escaped my super vision! Please report
them to my email or the program's page on kde-apps.org or adslgr.com.
The worst-case scenario would be to leave recordmydesktop recording at the
background. If you suspect this (which really should not happen anyway) you can find it out easily by runing:
$ pidof recordmydesktop
If it returns a number then recordmydesktop is indeed running. If that
shouldn't be the case (ie because you exited reKordmydesktop) use that
command to terminate it:
$ killall -9 recordmydesktop

ReKordmydesktop 0.99.1 was build and tested against:
- Kommander 1.2.1 (KDE 3.5.6)
- recordmydesktop 0.3.3.1
- xwininfo 1.0.2

To run it just extract it and click reKordmydesktop-0.99.1.kmdr!

PS. Of course such a program should be demonstrated through a video! Here you go:
http://www.andmarios.com/attachments/reKordmydesktop.ogg

Changelog:

- Everytime reKordmydesktop closes kills recordmydesktop if still running in order to avoid potential problems.

 One of best KDE soft

Fantastik GUi for best desktop recorder software. Just few bugs like renaming files. by default it offers recording.ogg and next one is recording.ogg1 *.ogg2 etc.etc.

Could it be 1.ogg 2.ogg 3.oog?

And then mayby resize option when encoding? This setting to Encoding tab? Mayby more like flvget (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/FLVGET?content=33973) has?

And what i miss from GTK-recordmydesktop version is systray icon. But is it possible with kommander?

The systray icon is possible but has certain limitations.

To get it run the script from a command line like this:
$ ksystraycmd --hidden kmdr-executor reKordmydesktop-0.99.1.kmdr

I know it isn't convenient but I'm working on a simple installer which, among other things, will create a link in K-menu and from there will be easy to automatically start every time reKordmydesktop in the system tray.

One problem is that "minimize" won't send the application to the tray, only clicking the tray icon will send the app to the tray. Of course this is something you get used to.
The most serious problem imho is that I can not accept clicks from the tray. I would like to be able to middle click the tray and have the recording to (un)pause.

About the size now, the encoding is made from recordmydesktop which doesn't support resizing. Thus to have resizing we would have to reencode the video with ffmpeg after recording. Also, as every capture has it's own aspect ratio it would be difficult to set the correct dimensions for the resized video.
I will give it a try when I'll find some time but I can not guarantee anything. :)

Last but not least, the renaming scheme will propably change in the next version.

That resize is not so important when recording normal window but it could be when recording full screen. Like 1280x1024 it takes bretty big filesize even with small and good encode settings.

I have tryed KVM (like KIM but for video) and it could easily allow to resize video to smaller resolution to be send via email and still look good. Too bad it dont work with me :-/

I have waited few years to have this kind software for KDE. And i have needed to use xvidcap and GTK+ frontend and when i saw this, i checked recordmydesktop and i wanted this kommander gui for it.

And is it possible to translate this to finnish?

I hadn't translation on my mind during the development of this version.
It is possible by editing the script with Kommander, though it is inconvenient.

I'll try in the next version to load all the strings from a text file. That way someone will need just to translate a copy of this file in order to make the app multilingual.

The problem right now is that I made the app pretty tight with settings and I don't know where to put the new ones. :p

For the resize I imagine it would be best first to capture and encode the video with recordMyDesktop and then, by hitting a button in reKordmydesktop, a new dialog to come up with resize/reencode settings.

It would be very good to get your app translated, just because it is one of best.

ps. could there be option to have that record window minimizied when pressing "record" or have somekind progress bar when encoding. I just tryed GTK+ version and those two were things what were missing, other way, your is much better :-)

and minimisize is not so important because always can set 3-4 second record timer (what GTK+ didint have!) and minimisize itself down and even switch desktop.

And i found good way to resize fullscreenvideos for windows users by using kmediagrab software :-)

Hello! Sorry I haven't write here for a bit.
I just had too much work. :)

I'm working on the next version of the program but due to other commitments the progress is slow.

The progress bar for the encoding status is one of the things I wanted most too. The implentation of this feature though seems impossible. I won't give up of course but I really can't promise anything about this.

Hi! Have you got any time to make your kommander script better? ;-)

KDE is made for users by users....
What can you give back to others?

Maybe a small Konch wrapper script will do the trick for the tray icon. You can trap middle-clicks, make menus, etc. :)

brilliant!

i make screencasts over at screencasters.heathenx.org and i use recordmydesktop in the terminal. i have never liked the gui versions because they seem to slow things down. could never figure out why. i found your app by accident by searching for something else on kde-apps. so i downloaded to try it out. awesome! favorite features are the grab window feature (which is probably doing an xwininfo...nice touch) and the extra command line parameters, since i use "-device hw:1,0" due to my playstation usb microphone (logitech).

i'm running this in opensuse 10.3 with kde and compiz-fusion running. :)

keep up the great work.

 Can't save

How do I save a recorded file? Should it save the file when you stop recording? I see no save button or dialog, and if I just close the program no file is saved to the directory I have chosen.
Thanks,
Mike
