Ok. I was on a LAN and I needed to share my internet connection because we didnt have any router.

I found this to be quite difficult, but after some searching on internet I found a very good explanation for making this work.

Now, i've made a WindowsXP like internet connection sharing guide for all who wants to share their internet connection easy and fast.

to use:

copy the tar.gz file contents into /usr/bin and then run:

kdeinternetshare.sh - English

For all those who are unsure how to use the guide, it should be good to stick to the default settings :)

This is only a quite simple guide so suggestions and improvments are welcome.

Changelog:

Fixed: Easier configuration by showing exactly how to set up the other computers.

Fixed: No Swedish version, I will translate the new version later.

That's a really bloated project for just some calls to iptables and an echo. I think people will go find a decent NAT how-to on Google before they install all dependencies they need for this script - many people don't use KDE, and those who do usually don't have Kommander installed. Every Linux box would be able to run a Shell script.

You forgot to mention that this has to be run as root.

if you run the script, it will run it trough kdesu.
Anyway, the reason I post it on kde-apps.org is that its a kde dependant project.

This is an atempt to make Internet Shared in just a few clicks.

I think new users prefer this way of doing things instead of using the console.

Some things are still to be fixed, but then it will be perfect.

Dont let negative comments like "user could google and read up for hours... yes even if he is 60 years old he can do so... no matter how many hours he invests or how much he has to work for money..." stop you.

I think there are enough users who don't care about installing 20+MB software for enabling connection sharing, but who really have trouble searching and reading (mostly english) docs and run some commands from shell (shell, what's that? Never heard?). Those small scripts are missing in many places and those many wizards windows offers for simple tasks are an advantige of windows for non-technical oriented users.

I seed the dependency problem from a different point of view: why are there so many dependencies? At least on Suse I have to install the complete kdewebdev package to run a commander sricpt? Wouldn't it be usefull to have a small kommander runtime pakage instead? Wouldn't it be usefull having the installed by default (at least on end user orientated distros)?

openSUSE has a standalone kommander-runtime package with just 333 kb. And I really think there should be more of those wizards for beginners. If you don't need it, don't use it.

I must have missed the existence of this package, fine to hear about this. I hope dependencies of kommander scripts are set to this runtime, so that the problems about the 20+MB depencencies are really gone.

I think it will be used by many popular distros very soon like kubuntu, frugalware, opensuse to "Allow" quick and easy "Internet Connection" Sharing.

I really think that you've made the job of internet sharing easier for Linux Users with your wizard :)

I tryed this and i got first time terribel artifact about your UI... i think you should think more about it and make it smaller... and forget those pixmaps because those dont fit for different themes.....

Would be cool to integrate it with some of the already existing management tools - like kdenetwork (because that manages networks) or guidance or with some KDE 4 stuff.

To show that I really like the application - and also out of technical interest :D - I created a rpm file for Fedora:

As you can see in the spec file I created my own (simple) starting script and called it just "kis" - on the other hand I also moved the kmdr script to its own place in /usr/share/kis.
I also added a .desktop file:

After you installed the rpm kis will come up in your menu. If you click it a kdesu dialog will be called automatically.

This package is just for fun, but one or two might want to laugh about the spec file or so ;)
