Description:

I do alot "top secrete" stuff lately so I encrypt files often. Curently I'm using encfs for encrypting my directories. That gets painfull quickly after opening konsole many times a day.

So it would be alot esier to protect your data with a special folder (like Desktop) in your home folder (or media:/). it could be encfs used as a backend for example. With some simple options about encryption and password.

Is it alot of work to realize that? What do you think?

I'm not sure if I completely understand the problem, but I know a few encryption-filesystems exist for FUSE. Maybe these could be of use for you?

i think it will confuse users more and more if you start having addresses like encfs:/myfile. also it reduces interoperability with other non-kde software.
try to explain to a non-geek why openoffice wont read his encrypted files.
not also that fuse+encfs are not available on all official kde-platforms.

i would prefer optional support for mounting encrypted filesystems from files. e.g. one could choose .crypt as extension and provide a simple dialog that pops up and asks:

What type of container is this?
a) Encfs (FUSE)
b) Truecrypt
c) ...
Enter Passphrase: XXXXXX
Use Keyfile? /foo/bar
Mount Point?


btw. encfs provides very weak security...

Maybe. I rarely use KIO slaves like applications:/, fonts:/ or settings:/ and yet they are there in my KDE. I don't think it will confuse users if there is one more.

I agree here, it doesn't have to be KIO slave, but some part of software that does that an easy way, or an optional feature.

What about just right-clicking and going to Actions > Encrypt file... ? I haven't used it, since I've never had to encrypt anything in Linux. It uses something called Kgpg --- and no, I don't know how that rates compared to the encryption scheme you mentioned.

The general idea is to put files into a container like encrypted folder.

I think the the best way would be, to use truecrypt. Only thing that has to be done is GUI.
