Description:

This is a KDE4 mockup. What I think really is missing is an encyclopedia for KDE. I know there is wikipedia, but I'm working on a laptop and I want something offline. Also I often need maps. So this is my mockup. It should enable to install articles and contents on your harddrive. It could even allow you to download a "base package" and to install Encarta or anything-else maps.
You should also be able to make CDs/DVDs of this data to save HD space. The app would then load its data form the CDs/DVDs if needed.

The menus:
File -> export article/map as pdf
File -> export article/map as html
File -> export article/map as odt
File -> print
Settings -> themes (?)
Settings -> configure toolbar
Settings -> keyboard shortcuts
Settings -> paths (for offline articles and CD/DVD

During a search, the app could autocomplete i.e. show suggestions like Katapult does for starting apps.
The advanced search should allow to search for photos, video clips or other things

There are little arrows next to the toolbar icons. These are the menus appearing when the icons are clicked:
Articles -> alphabetically
Articles -> by categories
Maps -> historical maps
Maps -> political maps
Maps -> satellite photos
Maps -> ... (other possibilities)
News -> wikipedia (this is always for online use)
News -> ... (other news sources)
Web -> edit online article (wikipedia)
Web -> add article to offline articles
Web -> search using a web browser

Well, this is just an idea. I'm not a programmer and I can't do that, so if anyone out there wants to code this, do it! Would be great.

Since it is getting its info from the internet (for example wikipedia), there could be a "update all articles" button that would allow to make new CDs/DVDs and/or save the articles on the HD.

Screenshots:
the first one is the window with the categories overview and the second one is showing search results.

i think this is quite good idea, but imho it would be very difficult to keep it up to date and that's why i think this wont exist.. i wish i was wrong..

I would just make it a kde front end to wikipedia thus saving one lots of time trying to keep it updated.

 Work in progress

Take a look at this:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/KDE_and_Wikipedia

"Knowledge is a Qt4 (soon to be KDE4)-based offline reader for Wikipedia. Its main goal is to serve as an offline substitution of the wikipedia interface in case no internet connection is available (either permanently or temporary)."

It wouldn't be difficult to add online functionality would it? But then, why would you want to? Why not just open konq and go to wikipedia... or alt + f2 wp:*search term*

Fine. Now take the UI design criteria listed in this, with their permission, and combine it with the back-end of knowledge and it would be a pleasing applications, instead of a butt-ugly generic Qt/KDE app that has looks like every other bland small application.

I don't know how the english wikipedia is manageing this but the german wikipedia offers their Wikipedia-DVD with "zeno"-files which can be viewd in the ZenoReader 1.0

This is propietery software but the development team is searching for a group of developers who is up to the task to program an open source Wikipedia-Reader which can read zeno-files and is especially programed for the needs of the Wikipedia-DVD.

You just have to find some programers who like to do something like that.

I think it is a very good idea but to find somebody who is up for a task like this - and willing to do it - is propably the most difficult thing.
