Description:

Make your Kicker (the KDE main panel) rock with your music.

It is a Kicker applet that displays what you listen to in Amarok.
A full-screen display can also be used independently of the applet.

With this panel applet, you always know what you are listening to, and can watch its cover and star rating: it is always visible.
It allows you to rate your music with one click: you can quickly change the number of stars of your musics from anywhere on your desktop.
Finally, it let you remotely control Amarok with one click from anywhere on your desktop: play next or previous track, pause, play, and seek to another position in the current track.

You also have the possibility to show your currently playing music in a beautiful full-screen display. Ideal for parties or to listen to music while doing something else away from the computer.
The full-screen display can be triggered independently of the panel applet. You can start it from the KMenu or from Amarok itself.

To install:
- You need to have automake 1.9 installed for the compilation to work. It should be Ok on modern Linux distributions. You also need Python for the Amarok script to work (optional). This should also be Ok.
- Extract the archive
- Open a konsole in the extracted folder (in Konqueror, go to the extracted folder and press F4)
- Run this set of command: ./configure --prefix=$(kde-config --prefix) && make && sudo make install
- It will asks your root password to install the applet on your system
- Right click the Kicker, choose "Add an Applet to the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Double-click "Kirocker Music Display"
- Start playing a music. The applet is empty when Amarok is stopped or paused, to not annoy you with useless information when you are working
- If you do not want the panel applet, the full-screen display can be trigerred from the KMenu or from Amarok itself (restart Amarok, enable the "Kirocker Music Display" script, and then right-click the playlist to see the action to show full-screen)

Note: After an upgrade from a previous version, press Alt+F2 and type the command "kicker default restart" to restart the Panel with the new installed version.

How to make the Kicker translucent:
The Kicker translucent white vertical background is also included in the package.
- Your screen resolution need to be 1280*800. If not, you will need some artistic skills and a Gimp experience to modify the given background
- Extract the image "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" located in the Kirocker Music Display archive
- Open your desktop background image with The Gimp
- Drag and drop "Kicker Right Translucent Background.png" to the Gimp window of your background image
- Save the image and set it as your desktop background image
- Right click the Kicker and choose "Configure the Panel..." (once the panel is unlocked)
- Place the panel on the right (click the button on the right)
- Set the size to "Personalized" and enter "96 pixels"
- In the "Appearance" tab, check "Enable transparency"
- Click "Ok" and you're done: ENJOY!

I think I will now return back to Windows, so i'm done with KDE development. I will perhapse help the KDE Windows project in the future, tough.
This project is now abandonned.
I'm afraid it will not be ported to KDE 4, unless new developers pop up.

hi,

nice applet. unfortunately it doesn't look very good with a 42px horizontal kicker.
maybe some options were great, e.g. don't show the album but the rating on the right.
controlls for skiping etc. aren't necessary in my opinion, since the systray icon of amarok already provides these features.
but one thing, that would be great is that kirocker should resize itself if amarok is stopped, so you have more space in kicker (if that is possible).

I will add options to hide progressbar / cover / stars / etc...

I always use global keyboard shortcuts, so I do not need controls, but people using mouse need them: it's only one click instead of a right click on the Amarok icon and a click on the control.
Controls will be shown right on the cover when mouse is over the cover.

Hum, yes I think the applet can resize itself. I will look at this.

Today I've tested the "resize down if no music is playing" but Kicker is very buggy on that way if you have a transparent panel:
- When resizing down, the freed place is painted with the background image, but shifted several pixels.
- When resizing up, the applet get a corrupted (not beautiful at all) background image. I should use hack to re-ask the panel background image a few milliseconds later...

When using a uniform repeating background image (like the default one) it is quite Ok.

I will have a look to add an option to "resize down the applet", and a way to automatically determin if the option should be activated.

I'm using the Application Launcher applet.

Right click the Kicker panel, and choose "Add an Applet to the Panel...", choose "Application Launcher".
You can drag and drop applications to that applet.

I really like the vertical 96px layout for the main panel, because:

- It let me have lot of space for such quick launchers: 80% of the applications I need can be launched in one click.
- There are a lot of space for the taskbar, and even with a full taskbar, task buttons always have a reasonable width to read the texts. No more obscession to close applications as soon as possible.
- It allows to show the music cover & information to progressively learn the name of what I'm listening to. And to see and change the number of stars of songs (without that, Amarok stars are useless because they become too complicated to use).
- There are a lot of space for system tray icons: no obsession to close applications as soon as they are not useful anymore in the following 10 minutes :-)
- I can display the date alongside the clock!
- My 16/9 screen is now looking like a more comfortable 4/3 one again: when I moved from 1024768 to 1280800 I felt the screen was smaller because is was so wide, compared to the height of the screen ;-)

I encourage people to test that vertical layout for the panel. Trying it is adopting it.

Excellent! Thanks. I like what you've done.

I too have switched from a 4:3 to a 16:9 screen lately, and was not really happy with using up that precious vertical space! I have modified (well, flipped) your background as I think I prefer my Kicker on the left, but thanks! Looking good. :-)

Do not worry, I'm aware of that.

A configuration dialog is going to be added in 2.2.
You will be able to disable progressbar.
Perhapse I will also allow to disable reflexion.

But to reduce the number of useless/confusing options, I should try out every combinations on paper and retain only the most relevant ones, and perhapse come up with automatic behaviour (moving the progressbar and stars on the text if cover is too small and there is place on the text...).

This take time to think about all of this.
Anyway, if I keep the same development pace as now, a smart version of Kirocker Music Display should be available for download

I think letting the applet be smart is the way to go. (re)moving the stars and reflection on a small kicker seems like a good solution. Thanx for writing this applet, it's very cool!
