Description:

I think it would be great if the KDE guys would holds contests for various parts of KDE 4 e.g. default wallpaper, style, window border and window deco etc then put everything to a vote at some point down the road. I think this would be great for the community as a whole in addition to KDE 4 itself. Thoughts?

 Nice idea...

...but I'm afraid some people would vote for vista-like windecos and such. The contestants should only post original work (no "inspired" by some other OS/DE).

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes borrowing and improving someone elses idea can be a positive thing.

If KDE goes purely for originality, it may become an odd and alienate many users. That said, yes I agree... you wouldn't want KDE to have an completely borrowed L&F.

That could be solved by the contest influenced by popular vote but ultimately judged by a chosen panel.

I guess they would especially vote for a vista like k-menu , I'm really in fear of that something like that will come (Suse indeed has somthing like that IMHO). I hope the developers will be smart enough to add an "oldstyle" option to keep the kmenu as it is now.

IMO, the "oldstyle" Kmenu is a mess! Kbfx is better... but still not that good. Vista has a new menu because Redmond has realized the same thing: the Start Menu sucks. I hope they come out with an easier Kmenu - and I expect it'll be better than Vista's Start Menu.

I'm not contra another kmenu. But for me those block-style menus are a pain, especially when they are not capable of showing a tree like folder structure like the current kmenu (showing subfolders *and* its content at the same time). Therefore my proposal is a new kmenu plus a classic style option (even windows is capable of that) for those like me who have to have everything in sight and don't want to scroll in menus.
