Description:

This is my "fixed" version of the clickable address bar idea that's going around. I'm not sure where the thought started, but when I first heard about it, I knew it had potential. Problem was, it seemed that every variation had downsides that weren't quite made up for by what you gained. So here's my take on the idea.

Features:
-Single-click navigation to any folder in the current path
-Click+hold for forward-navigation menus from any folder in the current path
-Dropdown menu of available protocols

Features not shown in mock-up:
-Left/right scroll arrows on ends of paths which are too long to fit in the window
-Path context menu includes "copy URL" option

Please, point out each and every flaw you find with this feature. Like all software, it deserves to be improved by the community.

Just an idea. It's like a penny on the floor. Take it.

I like the idea, the question is, how wise it would be in practice. What i mean is: i wouldn't use my mouse to select the folders in the adress bar, it's much more faster if you're doing it directly with the keyboard: 1st letter + down-key

just a thought :)

Are you talking about the folder-sensitive auto-completion feature? Although I never use that myself, I can see that it would be convenient. I'm not quite clear on what you're saying, though; do you see a way that SCAB would conflict with auto-complete?

Sorry, it's about 1 AM here. I'm a bit slow right now. :P

I like the KIOSlave selector part the most. It should also have tooltips explaining each one, since some like "fish" aren't the most obvious names :)

The Idea with the KIO Slave is good. for auto completion KDE supports the tab button in the adress bar.

all these adressbar enhancements are quite nice, but couldn't we just rip off windows vista's adressbar, where it is done right?
even if we don't like microsoft very much we can't pretend that their usability team didn't do a great job this time.

it's annoying as hell to see people working to improve the adressbar, but avoiding the best implementation, just because microsft was faster this time.

just my 2 cents ...

I'm usually as far from any copy of Windows as possible, so I don't have any idea how the new address bar works. You're absolutely right, thought, we shouldn't be avoiding good ideas just because of where they come from. I'll be more than glad to alter that image if there's any way at all to improve on the concept.

 Try it in Gnome

This feature exists in the Gnome file selector, and for some reason I've never liked it. Probably because I'm a keyboard person and needing to use the mouse to navigate file path components is harder for me than using the keyboard.

You can still type Ctrl-L or something to type the URI. I *think* they've made it easier in a recent version of GNOME, too. That part is a little awkward in GNOME, I agree.

Overall though, I think the improvement itself is a great one. One of the few GOOD ideas to happen in GNOME for ages, actually. It's great in KDE's Dolphin file manager, and I'd love to see it in KDE 4.
