Description:

Hello!

I saw Standard Icon Names from Freedesktop and I thought the mime types icons are not very specific to files because we have this: audio-x-generic, image-x-generic..., to change this to audio-ogg, image-png ...
Like this we will have detailed mimetypes.

What do you think ?

i don´t think it´s a good idea, because i think the users are not interrestet in the file format of the sound or the video. there is one generic icon that shows that it is a sound or a video an that´s it. i want to listen to the sound and i don´t want to know the file format, but that´s just my opinion to this idea. moreover, we can see the file format by the suffix.

if you can see the file format by the suffix, why do you need an icon?....
because we don't look at the extension we look at the icon, so it can't be generic to be effective. This is why the default icon theme has always ignored the gnome rule that icons should not have text on them. It is not at all useable. Why Tango is going against reason, when no one else does, is the question.

For multimedia it might not be as good. But if you are working and got a folder full of PDFs , ODFs, and DOCs you would like to have a fast way to differentiate them.

I think there should be a generic icon, users don't necessarly want to know it's a mp3 or it's an OGG, they want to listen to it. But, on the other hand, some people want to know if it's an avi or an mpg.
So, what I say is that there should still be a generic icon (so if you don't have an OGG icon the generic one will show) and the format-specific icon. This could lead to great themes onto wich we can see what filetype it is.

i usually have the same problem, i need open the file or check the properties of the file to know what type of format is the file, so this is helpful, you wil instantanly see what is the format of the file

The differences could be subtle, kind of reminds me of old versions of office, changed the icons for images, the only variation was the color of the brush. I think that's pretty good.

This is obsolete. Those Mimetypes exists already:

audio-x-flac audio-x-ogg and so on. audio-x-generic is a fallback, eg: if there's a wma file, but no audio-x-wma mimetype.
