Description:

I think the good old "Start Menu/Apps Menu" has to change.

It would be great to easily access our favourite apps in an intuitive and user friendly way. Today we know what we will be capable of tomorrow using XGL or AIGLX.

Circle Menus could really be something great. The idea is simple :

- We keep a panel with different items which represent a menu (a group of actions, apps ...) maybe we can simply use a dock (MacOSX dockPanel)
- Click on one of them or use a keyboard shortcut ("Super + ???") for example "Computer" (see screenshots)
- The screen become dark, the mouse pointer dissapear and a circle containing different icons appears in the middle of the screen
- Use the mouse wheel to select your app and just press enter or click right (right because it's eaisier to click right than left when you use the wheel)

Just imagine how cool it would be with Zoom and transparency effets.

You can eventually navigate through circles by selecting an item that will lead you to another circle... Nevertheless I think this would take more time than the traditionnal menu. But if we want to browse every apps we have to do it, the key thing here is to organize the circles by priority (the main apps first and the other after) defining different levels.

We can define default circles, for example :
- My Favourite Apps (Gimp, Firefox ...) defined by the user.
- System (Logout, configure ...)
- Multimedia (DVD, Musique, Photo)
- Office
- Anything else defined by te user : (My dev tools, My games ...)

This new way of thinking can also lead to other ideas, for example we could be able to enter or select parameters on an item (see Search in screenshots) or anything else.

We can also mix this with mouse gestures.

I really think, this idea would be nice, intuitive and user-friendly. It would brings something fresh and I'd really like to see it.

Of course, it has to be polished.

What do you think?

 good beginning

i think it´s a good beginning to think of a "plain" menu structure. we have to think of something different than tree-like menu things. but your mockup leaves a question open:

what can we do if there are more icons in this circle?
i think we can not use the whole screen, maybe a good way would be if you make a spiral instead of a circle.

greetings

 UPS/Gimmie/SLED

I think that The Ubuntu System Panel, SLED, and Gimmie all provide a favourite apps kind of thing. Technically, you can put links into the toolbar too, for your favourite apps. Also, there already is something a lot like this available from gdesklets, a circular launcher that sits on your desktop. To make it even more similar, gdesklets has a feature where you can bind a key to making all your desklets pop up above the other windows, meaning that it would be like pressing super and having the launcher pop up in your suggestion.

 Not again....

Before we leap wholeheartedly into something like this, let's ask... "Does it actually work?"

I'm betting not. Remember the radial menu plugin for Firefox? It looked nice, and was a complete pain. Some concepts stick around because they are simple and they work, and launch menus are one of those things.

+1 !
This kind of menus are cute, and easy to use... but it's just not enough performant.
It's important that people can find and launch their applications fast.
They need something easy to reach, fast to use, and very clear. This is clear, but it's not easy to reach, and it's not fast to use.
But in fact, I would see it as a secondary menu. It would never take place of the menu actually in charge, but sometimes it can be nice to use it... and of course, there is also the power of choice !

 Circle Menu

I dont think this would be a good replacement for the traditional menu, especially if you have a very full menu, however if it has en easily accessible shortcut it would be very useful at a shortcut bar for your most used applications. Perhaps it could link to your traditional menu to automagically work out which applications you use most?

I agree, this would be much more useful as an add-on to the current tree menu. It seems like if you crammed your whole menu to this thing, it would be pretty much akin to opening every applicaiton you have on your computer and trying to alt-tab between them. If you introduced sub-menus into the circle menu, then you'd essentially have the same thing that we've got now, except in a circle instead of a line. It would be nice to have a few things in it that you use a lot though. However, one of these things should not be a command to shut down your computer, since that's sort of a special thing you only do once in a while. There's no reason to have super fast access to logging out or turning off your computer.
