Description:

I think yakuake (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=29153) is one of the best 3rd party programs for KDE, and I use it very often. For those that do not know: yakuake is a konsole session trapped in a drop-down window. When you press F12, yakuake semi-smoothly grows from the top of the screen and you have a console ready (inspired by the Quake tilde-terminal). This terminal instance is not present on the taskbar. The concept is great for the terminal, as the terminal is a function I frequently access.

Perhaps the concept is very useful for other frequently accessed programs as well, such as a browser. Imagine konqueror or firefox bound to F11. Each time you press F11, a preloaded instance of the browser drops down from the top of the screen. If you have gmail open, you can immediately see if you have a new message. Your browser is probably always open anyway, so why not make it as easily accessible as possible?

Some properties of yakuake which make it so very usable to me:
1. If focus is lost, yakuake retracts itself, making management of that window very easy.
2. The size of the window as well as the extension speed is configurable.
3. The terminal is always open: no need for an entry in the taskbar.
4. The terminal is tabbed, something quite useful for a browser as well.

ADDENDUM: It seems someone feels the same way about yakuake I do. Find another idea for a yakuake-like interface for a filemanager here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=36655

Great idea! I hope, the plasma developers will find a way to provide a panel like this where any app may be 'plugged in'.

I'd thought about discussing something like that in the description, but I decided to go with one clear idea. While I couldn't think of other apps that would be useful, I'm sure there are plenty. If such flexibility could be built into the window manager, it would be great.

 only for konqueror ?

i do not for all, but i think konqueror is the nervous central of kde and it is the application that i use the most.
So, i use kdocker to keep it ready but i think that a system like yakuake could be great... :)

 something better

automatically assign a key or key-combination to every window in the taskbar and give every window the ability to minimised and maximesed like yakuake.

imagine the numbers aon the num-pad each representing a window or Shift+F* or ctrl+[number1-9]...
that would boost usability 500%

what do you think?

i've already proposed something like this once:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=36655
it got good marks but haven't heard of the idea being worked on.

anyway, it would be even better if you could do something like this with all applications :)
