Description:

I had this idea while putting together some files on my desktop to be ready to be sent out in an email.

The ability to "paperclip" together different documents "files" in a relational manner, indicated by a paperclip icon/emblem on the grouping.
this would allow items to be sorted, manipulated, and stored in a real world like manner. This is especially helpful when in the beginning of a project when your in the information gathering and sorting stages. Any thoughts?

It sounds a bit abstract but I think it would be quite intuitive. Good idea.

How about tar? Its KDE-integration could be improved though.

I'm not talking about an archive, but rather a way to link or group(think inkscape grouping seleced objects) together to create an associated visual representation of files to be included together, think about having a group of different file types clipped together, being able to drag and drop these all onto say a printer icon and out comes all your different documents, and photos in one operation.

This could be done with tar + better KDE integration. Now you can already browse tar archives like they were directories, but maybe the behaviour could be changed to what you described. And (only, not bz2 or gz) tar is fast enough for that. It would also be partially combatible with other DEs and window damagers.

is what this concept is normally called :) Not at all a bad idea - nothing new, really, but something i'd very much love to see as well :)

 clipped items

 by d3f3nd3r on: Jul 20 2006

When I was thinking about this at the time I envisioned a true 3D desktop where you could have a visual representation of a stack of objects either layered one atop each other or slightly fanned out( card hand style) to indicate the number of items clipped. Then the different ways that this information could be manipulated to organize and store items was very appealing to me as well. Perhaps the color of a clip could indicate priority (red very important, yellow not as important, and green low level). At work I constantly have many different types of documents paperclipped together to keep track of information, emails, reports, and photos all relating to one subject.

LOL, I thougth I was finished.

I also envision that these items that are clipped together would be a preview of the contents and not just an iconic representation. In a #D desktop scenerio imagine documents that ruffle and dogear as you leaf throught them on the desktop or in a directory on your system. I also would like to be able to add individual post it type notes directly ontop of a document for markups and notes for revisions. I'm not sure but it could be contained in the documents meta date or a header file?

IMO, a 3D desktop has been done and it's ruthlessly inefficient. The current "2.5D" x seems more efficient.
File previews are essential though.

 Metadata?!

by ecastro on: Jul 20 2006

This could be done with metada maybe? You could asign "tags" to files, for example "research about nuclear fusion" and then you could create virtual folders with for example all the html files with the "research about nuclear fusion" tag, and let kde do the search of this files and show them together in the folder. This would be great and a very important improvement in the way we work.

Depends on your priorities. You could throw all that meta data into a single index, but you'd have to refresh it regularly. That would really kill search times.

I think metadata on a per file basis will probably give less of a performance hit for tag-based searching. However, for this stacking idea an index-per-stack makes more sense.

Do you put everything at home into one drawer or closet? I don't think so. The whole concept behind file folders is not very intuative. Sure you can organize your folders by nesting them or grouping them, but what your really trying to organize is the contents. I realize the desktop (computer as a whole) is not a representatrion of real wold objects, but you can carry over real world paradigms to the desktop to validate abstract concepts. Case in point is the calculator program that comes with most OS's why make it look like a calculator? Because it helps bridge that leap from the physical to the nontangible. Just some thoughts..
