Description:

An idea for a desktop file management/application launch system. The desktop starts with the 6 main icons. Clicking on these focusses it to the centre and its sub-items radiate around it. CLicking on the centre icon returns to the previous menu. Folders with too much content to fit are opened in konqueror (or possibly other applications specific to the content of the folder). Any comments would be appreciated.

This is not meant to be a file browser, just an easier way to access desktop items.

 Basically

a nice idea, which I would like to see implemented for the start menu instead of file browsing.

WRT to opening folders that are too large in konqueror I think this would cause usability problems, as this is an inconsistent use case. In the case of the start menu there are no large folders.

sorry for not making this clear, by larger folders i was referring to subfolders of the home foler such as Pictures, etc

oh, and in response to your other comment i wasnt intending for this to be a complete file management solution, just for those files which are usually placed on the desktop

It sure sounds like the main menu of the Tapwave Zodiac, which is a wonderful little console. I wouldn't say no to have its navigation on my KDE desktop too... :)

 too slow?

as the amount of circle arranged icons is quite limited (as long as you don't want to test the pixelpreciseness of your mouse) this could lead too many layers, i.e. along path to click through?!

so it's (only) good for some docker replacement, but imho it's in general not a good idea to provide fractured ways to start apps from the desktop (most stupid idea apple ever had.. has stol... bought! ;)

it wouldnt have any more than 3 layers (no more than the kmenu, system settings, etc has at present)

 just a little prob..

nice idea, but there's just one little problem: it works as long as you have no windows open on your desktop. If you have something open, then you have to minimise everything (or rather press the 'show desktop' button, not very practical to get to applications quickly, like when you have a menu bar. But there would be another way.. if you can bring it up by clicking somewhere, or moving the mouse to a corner, then it would be a very nice featzre to have

keep up the good work :)

KMenu aka Start Button
instead of menu, spider appears raised to top ?
perfect for apps but maybe not file browsing, could get messy unless a depth limit or priority flag was imposed
could only show the latest or most accessed directories and call default file browser for detailed examination ?
I would use it for apps and location shortcuts on a kicker applet button but still keep KMenu

got my vote ;-)
