Description:

I think the KDE 4 should boost the community element. I believe a mojor step to this direction would be simplifying the community In the screenshot is a collage of some of the "kde" website screenshots. I wish to adrress following issues:

- It would be great to have a consistent visual in terms of colors, placement of elements and graphic elements themselves.
- Centralized authentication. Single login to the Kommunity would give access to all the sites: wiki, kde-apps, kde-look, mailing lists... (At the moment several registrations are needed to access various sites. For the mailing lists individual passwoeds are even needed for each separate list! - also: centralized mailing-list administration along the lines of yahoo groups.)
- People could differentiate themselves in the community with "tags" that tell to which group(s) they belong to: (Users, developers, artists, translators, quality, promotion... various projects) and priviliges (like editing wikipages) could be assigned along these lines.
- Newly structured website organisation. The core KDE and related projects are not well differentiated.
- Specialized KDE app to handle the interaction (registration, gpg-keys etc.)
- Konqueror mode for advanced wiki editing. (mediawiki support would be nice, as it could be used in wikipedia as well.)

Changelog:

Update: Added Mockup of what the frontpage could look like. Shamelessly inspired by the from the Appeal Project.

 you're right

totally right. the problem is NOT that nobody wants this, or even that different website admins have different tastes. the problem is: who's gonna do it? we need a common wiki-like system, cheap or free, flexible, not to heavy on hardware requirements, we need a theme, and someone has to port the current websites one by one to the new design.

any volunteers?

visual design is of minor importance as long as the look chosen is good.

The main problem of KDE from my perspective is the lack of real community sites.

"Specialized KDE app to handle the interaction (registration, gpg-keys etc.)"

Forget it, passport does not work, you will end in a ldap whatever backend mess.

It is no big deal to port say the KDE look to Mediawiki, it ois probably a great deal to convince someone to commit it.

sorry, but from what i've seen from the KDE people i think i can safely say: if you do the work, they'll support and commit it. ask them politely, tell them why mediawiki (for example) would be better - and if those reasons are sound and technical, and you are willing to do the grunt work, i can assure you: it is highly unlikely they won't allow you to do it. heck, they might even give you admin rights within the first week you are working on it...

the KDE developer community is extremely open, in every way. don't believe me, read some mailinglists, talk to some people: see for yourself.

if you're willing to do it, apply ;-)

ask it on a kde mailinglist, i'm sure they are interested.

by the way, i LOVE the styles from
http://plasma.kde.org
http://phonon.kde.org and
http://solid.kde.org

imho those should be THE new style :D

a little bit silly to replace every G by a K, no matter where?

Otherwise... yes, this might be great but requires all project to work together, which will be not an easy task.

Anyway I do not see why this is related to KDE4 and filed in the KDE 4 Brainstorm category.

I blog, therefore I am.

Because KDE is not just an intgrated desktop environment-it's a way of life!-)

More seriously: KDE is knit to the net. There is a community of various kinds of people contributing to KDE in different ways. While the KDE is becoming more Solid on the desktop, the community services are left wiithout care. Not only is this an imbalance between good desktop and terrible networking, I'm afraid it might become an obstacle - unless it already is one - for new people coming to the community: as developers, artists, users, whatever.

Looking it from the promotion point of view: many people get to know KDE by our website. Then they look at the Gnome website. And think: "Hmm.. I wonder which looks better..."

Oh, and forgot: why KDE4?

We are remaking the desktop. Why not remake the KDE?

The KDE-www-devel team is already discussing and working on a totally new website concept for months. Indeed, a consistent layout and a better wider framework..

So, Wait and you will see!

I gues that this could be a real advantage of KDE4 if people feal like part of a community.
There is no desktop where people get integrated into a community. With Web 2.0 this concept is needed. This makes your desktop and your computer less technical.

This should integrate several program which can access a community page/server like this.

This would be great, hopefully even get as big as ubuntuforums. Would be good if it included some non kde topics too.

mockup should say "an open source..."
