Desk Drawer

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

This idea is really simple. A set of customizable tabs (drawers) at the edges of your desktop that you can put stuff into. They would act like regular windows but they would be attached permanently to the desktop and showing them on the task bar would be optional. This would be a more convenient way of accessing frequently used folders with out taking up room on your task bar/desktop/toolbar and still retain drag n\\\\\\\' drop abilities. You could easily link each drawer to any folder on your hard drive or if you so choose, create a drawer just for links to apps. I apologize for the crude diagram. unfortunately, I lack the GIMP skills other members of KDE Look possess. If any one likes the idea and wishes to better illustrate it, please by all means feel free to do so. You may email me the pict and I will post it.

 Is this like...

I remember Lotus SmartSuite (yes, Word Pro and all) (at least millenium edition) had a bar like that with 'drawers' at the top of the screen. Each drawer had different tabbed categories, and each category had items. There were also categories which were links to web services.

 Mockups

Hi,

I like the idea, even if I'm not sure I would use that feature if it existed.
Well, as I said, the concept is nice. However, the mockup isn't very eye appealing, so I made my own mockups. xD

Mockup:

Explanation:

Note! The large spacewasting icon is just an idea, a suggestion. Please post comments.

I don't think I have to write that much about the mockups, check the second image.

Nice Mockups. This is pretty close to the idea I was trying to convey. Would you mind if I put this up?

Thank you very much.
And I wouldn't mind, I would be happy if you did.

 text input analogy

Do you know dasher ?
Such an interface ressembles your idea, in a dynamic way.
Their documentation is gran'ma friendly, why should I be redundant ? (don't forget their animations).

i don't really see the connection between a (very cool indeed) text input system and a 'basket' like technology proposed here.

Basket offers something like this, at least the drag'n'drop-items-in-it part. maybe ask the author for an easier and larger drop-area, a kicker applet or plasmoid or something? (check basket.kde.org )

This is no new idea. Look at this (abandoned) project:

 Enlightenment

Enlightenment DR16 does something similar to this. Perhaps this feature could be applied to any window by having kwin allow a "drawer" window that you can change the title of.

Hope is just wishing for the opposite of what you know is going to happen anyway.
