 Linux GUIs Outdated

by DecayingOmega on: Oct 27 2002

Score 50%

Am i the only one who has noticed the
KDE Community's attempt the copy MacOS and Windows GUIs? WHY? BECAUSE LINUX HAS ONLY OUTDATED GUIS!!! KDE is pathetic compared to Windoze and OSX GUIs, something needs to be done fast, or we will fall so far behind that Linux will never be a viable desktop solution

 So Wrong

by DustMage on: Oct 27 2002

The reason we see so many Windows and MacOS
clone themes for Linux is *not* because of
an inferior GUI system for Linux. It makes
the new (and not-so-new) converts from other
Operating Systems feel more at ease in their
new surroundings. And so what? If it helps you
get familiar with the KDE desktop, then is it
not a good thing? The important thing it that
KDE is safe, powerful, and stable. The look
is completely irrelevant when considering
the relative merits of the system.
Anyone who comes to kdelook.org should know
that the look of a theme (good or bad) doesn't
change how well KDE works. We are all here
(Windows wannabes and GNU zealots) for the
same reason. To support KDE!

 Just a thing...

Think that at Redmond and at Cupertino, Microsoft and Apple have people warking all the day on the GUI, or they pay some people for it. For example, think on the beautiful icon set of XP. It was done by the Iconfactory group, in mor then 4 months!!! (http://design.iconfactory.com/pages/winicon/windowxp.html)
Well, sometimes we have someone payed for the kde-GUI, like Everaldo, payed by Conectiva for creating his excellent Liquid set. But think that most of the people at kde-look are not professionals, they just do it for fun, and *not* alawys have great design skills!
So, maybe i future we're going to create something innovative, maybe it's wrong to just copy MacOSX and WindowsXP, but maybe that's a starting point.
Another thing: it's easy to say "nothing new here", but propose something new made by you!!!!

First off, most of the original DOS commands existed in Unix long before Bill Gates ever tinkered with a computer. Secondly, not only has M$ ripped off the Mac over the years, but Unix as well for the Windows GUI. Where do you think the idea of the taskbar came from? The Unix dock! Now, Mac has become a Unix based OS, and MS continues to rip others off, claiming that they innovate. What a joke! You deserve Windoze...

 XP OSX Cliones

Maybe it is also the fact that Linux is a better OS but some like the look of the two major platforms. Instead of breaking down every newcomer or playing the Linux elite role maybe some of these "converts" as you like to call them would feel allot more comfortable in the KDE community and start to break out new and original material. Not everyone is gooing to make a Keramik or a liquid on the first attempt.
