Description:

This menu with 2 columns allows to have shortcuts to main applications and actions in the start menu (left panel), without losing the classical "All Applications" Menu (right panel).

The Menu is displayed with two panels:
the left panel shows the shortcuts to basic apps or actions;
the right panel shows all the apps classified by categories.
When we click on another category than "All Apps", for example on "Documents", the content of the right column changes instantly.

This K Menu with two panel would be a way to have less shortcuts on the desktop or on the taskbar by putting main apps and actions shortcuts in the K Menu, but without slowing down the users who want to have directly the menu with all apps listed by categories (like in the current KMenu). Of course, we should have the possibility to use the normal KMenu.

well, i don't think this is a bad idea. at least the menu is better than the current one. and i don't care about copying windows, they copy stuff from KDE too - why not.

 refinements

Well, copying it's not bad, but why not
adapt the style to something more
unix-useful? the "look for a file" field
could have below an execute command field,
and the whole menu , granted that shutdown
and all applications must be there always,
could be customizable (letting the user
choose if he wants and were he wants
things like "most used apps" or just
"quick launch apps"), as a plasma panel
that hides when the K button has not been
pressed in the previous 4 seconds...

I forgot, letting user save the menu configuration (not theme) independant to
other plasma settings would be great too.

 windowsXP start menu

I know that there are some similarities with the WindowsXP start menu, however I think this "2 panels KMenu" has more flexibilty than the Windows XP Menu.

Personally, the first thing I do when I install Windows XP, that's to desactivate the "New Windows XP Menu" and to activate the "Classic Menu". So I don't want a "Windows XP Menu" in KDE: I really prefer the KDE 3.5 Menu.

However, I think it would be useful to have a menu where we could access the main tasks (Web browsing, Media Player, Updates) more directly, without losing the list of the Applications sorted by categories (by putting this list in a right panel). I think this "2 panels KMenu" could be useable, and is more subtle than an imitation of the Windows XP Menu.

What is difficult to say, that's if this "2 panels KMenu" would really be more efficient than the normal KMenu. Maybe I would directly disable it after having used it for only one day :)

Don't be upset for my comment. But i've changed from win to linux because it looked different, and alot of other things that means a lot. But a lot posts in this forum, make me ondering if the objective is becoming close to win.
Sorry but is my opinion. The idea is good, but to much win

 Clutter

All you're doing is moving the "clutter" from the desktop to the menu. Besides, it reminds me too much of the Windows "this is how we want you to work" menu. Whenever I use Windows I always revert back to the classic menu without the frills.
