Description:

This menu with 2 columns allows to have shortcuts to main applications and actions in the start menu (left panel), without losing the classical "All Applications" Menu (right panel).

The Menu is displayed with two panels:
the left panel shows the shortcuts to basic apps or actions;
the right panel shows all the apps classified by categories.
When we click on another category than "All Apps", for example on "Documents", the content of the right column changes instantly.

This K Menu with two panel would be a way to have less shortcuts on the desktop or on the taskbar by putting main apps and actions shortcuts in the K Menu, but without slowing down the users who want to have directly the menu with all apps listed by categories (like in the current KMenu). Of course, we should have the possibility to use the normal KMenu.

 Butterfly ballot

This reminds me of the infamous butterfly ballot in the 2004 Florida elections which confused people by listing choices in two columns left and right.

The only thing about this design I can commend is there wont be hanging chads...?

Actually, I'm more keen to the single-menu approach that seems to be taken in Windows Vista (so menus don't keep popping out all over the screen). This double menu idea might be useful in the single-menu widget approach. As it is now, though, I've given up on the multiple submenu pullout standard for the K/Start Menus as a standard.

 Make one out of two

I suggest to directly include your right (second) panel with "More programs" in the K menu. This would give you a two-column panel similar to XP's, with different content, though. Clicking on "More programs" to get access to another panel always takes precious time (for the panel to load).

i'd rather see not a menu, but a app with a window and all such stuff, full-screen or at least maximized, so one can immediately see 90% of what one might wanna open/start/view/whatever... maybe just show the desktop with some clever applets?

I agree, it looks too much like windows' menu.

I don't agree it's TOO much XP.
Actually I like it, but it must be optional.

It's the type of thing I would probably like, but would like different settings on my different computers according to use

you got my "bad" vote.
this one imitates windows one-to-one, and makes kde's look be not unique and unoriginal.
