Description:

It is a mix between a normal URL bar (where we use the keyboard to change the path from the bar), and a "fixed" URL bar, where we have to click on arrows to change the path from the bar (like in Windows Vista).

The idea is to make clickable the slashes in the URL bar. So, if we want to change the path by using the URL bar, we can:

- click on a slash, and a menu with all the available folders is displayed;
- write the path in the URL bar with the keyboard (normal method)

I think this could be a way to make more rapid the navigation in the file system, but I don't know if it's really feasible...

Update 2006-04-10: the slashes are slightly bigger but don't take more place. Concerning mockup , there is a separated version for Konqueror and Firefox, now it should work better.

Wow, cool idea, never heard or seen of something like that before - it's a nice combination of the command-line features of the address bar and the gui-features you would have with icons...

I hope some of the developers see this :)

 nice idea

yeah, this is a good idea.
But there should be an option to just let the user jump into the path clicked on, so that there isn't a menu displayed.

 nice, also...

...what about clickable file protocol as well? This way more people would discover the plethora of useful ones like fish:// for example.

If you have to type it in all by yourself you are less likely to stumble across it unless you read some tutorial... Just a thought.

none

That's a nice idea :) It could also help some more advanced users, because sometimes it's hard to remember the exact spelling of some rare kio-slave. But I think it should be writable also.

good
the idea could be olso to click on the slashes to go to the path, and, with the right button of the mouse, to show the menu

 excellent idea, but

I think it's an excellent idea, however, a slash is a bit small/thin to click on in my opinion. I think it would better from a useability point of view, to to click on the directory name to get a list of options instead

Hi,
yes, this thinness is a problem, that is quite difficult to resolve. We can:

- As you said, click on the directories names instead of clicking on the slashes.

But if we want to keep the characteristics of a normal URL bar, clicking with the Left Button on a directory name has to insert the cursor where we've clicked, and a Double Click has to select the whole path.

However, maybe it would be possible to use the right click or the middle click:
by inserting the list of the available directories into the Right Click menu; or by displaying the list when clicking with the Middle Click, that is at present used to Past a text in the URL bar.

- Make bigger "clickable slashes". The disadvantage is that there would be less directories names shown at the same time in the URL bar, because of the place taken by the bigger clickable slashes.

- Make one "clickable slash" bigger when, and only when, the cursor is very close to it, or over it. So, there is maximum one slash that is bigger at a precise moment. The disadvantage is that when we are moving the cursor over the path bar, this effect of "normal-bigger-normal shlash" that "shakes" the text in the URL bar can be irritating.

Here are some elements of answer. If someone has got an idea, don't hesitate to post it :)

I hope my English is quite comprehensible. If you want more precisions, I will willingly answer.

I'm agree with you, but many people find it is a good idea. IMHO, it should be added to KDE4 only if it can be disable.

I agree: large slashes are hard to hit with the mouse and look ugly.

Btw: The idea is not new, I have even seen some CDE apps using this. An interesting way implementing this comes from FLTK: Here, a button bar below the address input line appears where thin buttons are aligned along the directory names. Its basically the same functionality when clicking the directory name or clicking the associated button. But: Noone looses convenience. (Mouseactions in input lines may affect clipboard and selection modes).
