Description:

This idea is based on "Dialogwindow Improvement" by bushwakko. I had to open a new entry, because it's not possible to add screenshots to comments.

I just wonder if dialog boxes have to be an extra window at all?! There's often trouble with dialog boxes opening in the background or accidently being send to the background by the user. bushwakko is right, dialog boxes need no titlebar with minimize, maximize and close button. This is only confusing.

I remember I read about KDE4 having several layers. So the idea is, that every window and subwindow (tab) has it's own dialog layer. When a user action is required, the dialog box (not window) is opened in the dialog layer of this window (subwindow). The content-layer is set to graycolor mode and darkened, to not distract from the dialog box. (see screenshot)
This way, the dialog box sticks with the window and can't be lost in the background by accident.

This mockup is based on the design mockup by UpsilonH24 (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=35183)

 Good idea, but...

I like this. Showing small dialog boxes without having to spawn a new window is a good idea.

However, I think this has the potential to end up like Vista's infamous UAC dialogs. The dialog box should be small and out of the way, just like OSX's little fold out dialog boxes. It shouldn't have to desaturate the window for every dialog that pops up, although an exception could be made for password dialogs such as the ones in kcontrol or kwallet. But even then, it should only be able to desaturate that specific window. I NEVER want to see my entire desktop desaturated like in Vista.

Also, I think this would only work for notification dialog boxes. Big dialogs should have their own child window.

I like where this is going, but the main goal should be to make dialogs less annoying than they already are. Nice job, and keep up the good ideas!
