Keyboard Selection (hardware support)

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

Just as KDE Control Center should have better support for the newest mouse hardware buttons (forward/back buttons, tilt scroll, etc.) newer keyboards should also be allowed to reach their full potential. Currently one must have extensive knowledge of the X.org architecture, or use lineak, which I have found to be somewhat of a hassle to set up.

The KDE 4.0 Control Center should allow easy configuration of known keyboard types (Logitech series, Microsoft series, etc.) with a drop-down list such as the mock-up presented by fyzix regarding mice - as well as unknown keyboard types. Unknown types should be able to be configured simply by clicking an assign button, which would monitor X for any inputs pressed in that time, and then assign that scan code to a preset function (system volume control, media control, etc.), or a generic function (go to webpage, etc.).

One of the major turnoffs for linux in home use (which I believe is the ultimate objective of KDE, and KDE 4 specifically) is the lack of complete AND EASY hardware support. Each additional feature of modern hardware KDE adds support for is one step closer to linux desktop domination! :-)

My apologies for the lack of a real mockup - I have gimp skills, but I will leave the actual functionality and design to people that do the implementation, unless otherwise requested.

 I totally agree

Hi everyone,

I totally agree with this proposal. It is a must-have for KDE4.

I spent endless hours in front of many X.Org Documents and other howtos to setup some media-access keys for my Logitech keyboard and still some keys aren't working. This is so easy under windows.. You just plug-in your keyboard, install the driver and you're good to go.

"you install a driver" -> this means: windows is not able to recognize your function keys neither!
and it is NOT really kde's job to! if your hardware facturer shipped drivers for linux you won't have any problems... so bother them!

As long as Linux is a minority, we will not be able to talk the manufacturers into making drivers. Until that happens, we will have to do the foot work ourselves.
And the ideas that NetGuru has presented here are way better than what you get today, even in windows.

 Another approach

Well, KDE cannot support every one of the multimedia keyboards (they are so many that buying every one would require a fortune). Now KDE uses X.Org's keyboard symbol tables.

There is another approach: what about an app that can be used to define symbols by key codes? For example, the user enters code 234 (obtained through Xev) and selects a symbol name from a list of all availiable symbols (or enters a custom name). Then he/she adds all other symbols and saves the config. Then this config can be picked up by KDE. What do you think?

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

i think the only thing now that doesnt work as good as id like it to is my keyboard. im always trying to show off my kde laptop, and now everything works nearly perfect except my keyboard. if only i could use my volume control buttons, no one could criticize my operating system...

This is a fine program, thank you for your work! The support for configuration of the mouse extra buttons would make keyTouch simply brilliant.

Yes, I believe this is the project that we were looking for, and it is definitely on the right track.

Contacting the KDE and GNOME projects to begin integration of this project right away is a must, as they cannot be expected to look for you.

The mockup presented by your SF webpage looks VERY good, however I would like to emphasize the "integration" that you spoke of earlier. This must be integrated seamlessly with the KDE Control Center and the GNOME control center if it is to be effected. A separate program can be cumbersome. Furthermore, it is far better for the average user if all settings can be found in a central location (the Control Centers).

Finally, the project should also consider adding support for additional mice buttons (forward, back, etc. as discussed in a previous post) in the same central location.

Thank you for your excellent move forward with this concept, and please continue the good work.

The webpage contains screenshots, not mockups. KeyTouch is a ready to use application.

It is a great dissapointment for the desktop user trying to migrate from offtopic to Linux to have no convenient configuration tools for multimedia keyboards and mice. It seems that the keyTouch program does much of the job. However, it currently does not support mouse buttons configuration (afaik), also this program is not available out of the box and still is not as popular as it clearly deserves. A configurator like keyTouch, but with full mice support, must be integrated into KDE4 Control center.
