Description:

I've tried out XGL on kde, using the GLXcompmng for effects, and I have to say it's pretty neat.

Though I think KDE should have it's own version of xglcompmgr.

Allow users to turn off effects for selected application. i.e. Games that go fullscreen, and/or use OpenGL graphics. Applications that use OpenGL graphics.

From what I can tell XGL lags these application big time. Though it could change, XGL is still in it's early stages of beta.

 demo of xgl

for those who don't know what XGL is or what it can do, you can take a look at a video demo here:
http://www.linuxedge.org/?q=node/58

it's... really impressive. I really hope to see one day these nice effects on my KDE desktop :)

I don't know much about all those technical stuffs... The article says: "Compiz, the OpenGL window/composite manager". So is Compiz something like our KDE's KWin ? Is it possible to use directly Compiz in KDE or kwin must be modified in order to use those effects ?

Yes, Compiz is combined window manager/composite manager for Xgl. glxcompmgr (which is independent composition manager, like xcompmgr) is now unsupported and doesn't work with latest Xgl.

You can use Compiz instead of KWin, but there is now only gnome-window-decorator module (so you must have some parts of GNOME installed). But Compiz is modular and Zack Rusin (one of core KDE developers) is writing kde-window-decorator module for Compiz (you can find it already in CVS, but it is not complete and doesn't work now).

cube desktop switch ? fancy minimize anim ? a little tranparency here and there ?
these have been done before kompmngr came on the scene

this is by far the most useful application of GL Xserver that I have seen,
real stuff, that is actually useful not just a bit of eyecandy

a big file but well worth watching

I tried the howto and got everything installed and got the Xgl server running. Got kde started but could not start compiz (or glxcompmgr). Both apparently did not like Kwin. In fact, there's nothing mentioned on the above link of how to finally get the effects in kde ...
