Description:

The KDM Theme Designer would allow any user, even the most inexperienced ones, to easily create a KDM Theme so that it suits THEIR needs and taste. It would allow the user to drag, drop and resize the elements he wants, and then it would automaticly and transparantly compile and install it. Of course, an export option would be available.

If it is implemented into KDE 4, there would be more options, like transparancy, shadows and perhaps even sounds.

(Some elements could be missing, like the possibility to add an accept button in the theme, but this is just a mockup, so it's no big deal...)

This concept could also be applied on Splash Screens and other things...

The wallpaper used in this mockup is XDream's Blue Crystal 6, which is amazing. Grab it here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=16337
Also, thanks to Eriol for his beatifull KDE 4 Mockup.

Note: More advanced users would still have the possibility to make their own KDM theme.

Give me comments and rate my work!

Thanks.

Upsilon

 My gut reaction

was at first to think 90% (SWAG) people wont use this, they just stick to the given defaults.

But observe, when people are able to (easily) customize and make a thing exactly to their liking they become very attached... eg. cellphones, web-pages.

So I think KDE4+ should first and foremost come with excellent defaults but provide tools like this also, making it a 'sticky' environment that people can fall in love with and dont want to leave!

:)

good taste! Such a slick work environment would be a delight to use. Great idea, yours! Please, tell me: how did you make that mockup? I love the whole combination: fonts (rather nasty-looking on Linux...), colours, shadows, everything! Thumbs up! ;)

I can't have any credit for the style. It's all Eriol's work. All I did is apply it to my KDM Theme Designer concept.

Oh! And for the how I made it: I used Photoshop (I have a dual boot system) and the font is Tahoma...

 Good Response

All right, since this idea seems to get a good response (best rated of this site as I write this ;), I'd like to take this to the KDE 4 Devs. Anyone know where to go and/or who to contact?

Thanks.

I don't know who exactly to contact, maybe take a look at the appeal website:
http://appeal.kde.org/wiki/Contact

But actually, I guess your proposal didn't only receive those very good votes because of your idea of a kdm theme designer, but also because the screenshot looks damn cool. I know it's not your work, I knew the original mockup already before it was posted here (as it was posted on kde-artists.org), but your mockup seems somewhat cleaner without the very colourful background of the original mockup.

So my proposal is actually that you also point to the style you use in your mockup (of course with all the copyrights and so on) and propose them to use this style as default in KDE4 - because with your mockup, you prove it to be usable in standard applications.

Other then that it is a nice idea. Not reeeally sure of what to think of it but I like it for now.

Martin
