Updated:  Feb 21 2006

Description:

This is the final mockup for a new look and feel for Konqueror in KDE4.

Include 4 interesting features like a linkeable adress bar and a filter for files.

Here is the list of features:

- Linkeable adress bar

- Undo close tab Button (for recover tabs accidentally closed)

- Filter by type

- A Metadata editor and File properties viewer

Changelog:

Version 1.1 lite

- Menu bar above toolbar now

- Added a Filter by type button below toolbar instead of the File filter in the status bar.

- I remove the horizontal file properties view

- The File properties view appear when switch between the Metadata editor

- I remove the File Filter with filtering options (this feature will be in Tenor)

 Analysis

I'll try to analyze your proposal. I agree with all parts that I haven't analyzed.

"Menu bar below toolbar" (not written about)
I don't see problems with that, but I don't see any advantages, either.

"Metadata editor"
I accept this only as the general notion of an inline metadata editor. In your mockup there are several problems. First of all, why are the editboxes here rectangular and the location and search bars are rounded? Also, why does the horizontal scrollbar span all the way under the metadata editor?

"File properties" && "Changable items"
IMHO all of the details provided are not user-friendly. This means that they are familiar only to the technically initiated. An exception is "Opens with" - it is important enough. However, it is used so seldom that it's better fit in the "Configure Konqueror" dialog.

"Preview for media files"
I have an IMHO better suggestion. Put a link "Preview" next to the icon. When the user clicks it, it turns into a "Stop" link and the icon turns into a playing preview. Clicking stop gets back the generic icon and turns itself back into "Preview".

"Sidebar"
You mean autohiding, here? Toggled by mouseover?

"File filter"
What's the grey cross? Clearing the field?

"Linkable address bar"
The location bar will be gone altogether in KDE 4. It'll be replace by Tenor with its tagging.

I expect a response and a possible update. If you don't understand some aspect of my comment, please ask me for clarification.

A typo - "replace by Tenor" should have been "replaced by Tenor". Also, "What's the grey cross?" should have been "What's the grey cross for?".
Sorry for not proofreading carefully.

"Menu bar below toolbar"
I like that for the style of theme and because I believe is more comfortable.

"Metadata editor"
You right, I'll fix it.

"File properties" && "Changable items"
You think that "Play lenght" is a technical term?, I think not but with the others terms yes. I fix it with a "Advanced" link.

"Preview for media files"
I try with that.

"Sidebar"
Appear with a mouse click

"File filter"
Yes, Clearing the field

"Linkable address bar"
Nothing to say

Then please write this in the description. But I doubt you'll get this into KDE 4 without some serious argumentation.

Oh yeah, I didn't notice "Play length". This would be fine.

hmph :\

dude, you know what my dream is? Windows + a little MacOSX look + the Linux kernel. 'Course, Windows belongs to MS, so we're never gonna see that! Therefore, we'll just have to build the "Windows" part of the equation ourselfs. But since not everybody is genious, or has the posibility to work in their free time, the great KDE team is doing that for us!

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

 Metadata is future

I only like that metadata editor in right side, it will easily help to add/ modify metadata of file.

Preview button/window is bretty stupid because we already has those. But we need somekind video preview, i suggest it should be like sound preview is now. To activate video preview, move mouse over video and after few seconds it starts playing that video in thumbnail.

That "Filter" button is not usefull. Tenor will replace that. And there should be possible to have "Filter" what konqueror has now and "Global Search" toolbar too for tenor.

I dont like idea that menu goes under addressbar or most used control buttons are top of menu so i need always go over over menu to press "Back".

And that bottom "info" area is pretty ugly, why should i use that if i need resize my manager window bigger to see files in it? What's wrong with tooltip idea?

This idea is "OK" if i only use one (1) filemanager window but if i use (as i do use) more than one, it's same as i could run only one application in my desktop.

User should have possible to twin-panel (more or less than 2 panels) view with konqueror and so on change to use the power of kio slaves.

And if Microsoft make new "look" for own system, Why we need try to copy that and suffer for that? Almoust all Vista screenshots looks bretty bad and best parts what MS has "made" to Explorer, can found from Nautilus and konqueror already.

KDE power is not that it is just simple to use like nautilus (what is too simple) but power is it can be customize for every user. I can take all buttons off what i dont need, i can move toolbars/buttons where i want and i can use Akregator/FTP/filemanager/add_kio_slaves_here with it and lots of more better ideas than explorer can have.

If someone really like to get linux (kernel) + windows look, they should change OS (back) to windows to get it.
Just let KDE be powerfull and own kind and do not try to copy 1:1 look from Windows to KDE.

KDE it just must be...

 menus

Not a fan of the menu below the toolbar. I don't usually have a problem with things looking like Windows, but this seems to want to look like Vista for no good reason. I don't think the menu in IE7 works well there either. (of course if you were really going for Vista, the menu would be below the tabbar as well IIRC)

Placement aside, I wonder about having buttons in the menubar. Will it be a normal menubar then, able to be placed at the top of the screen like we can do now with menubars? would it be ok to have tab buttons up there instead of in the app window?

I do like some of the ideas in there, like an undo tab close button :) I always close a tab right as I notice something interesting in it I actually wanted to read. Something like that would save me a bit of grief.

having been trying out the IE7 beta lately, I must say: DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WITH THE MENUBAR/TOOLBAR. It's so frustrating as hell for me!

I'm voting down, this is the antithesis of what I think a good design should be.
