Description:

Hi all,
First, I\'m not an artist, so sorry for this poor picture.
I\'d want to see a 3D desktop for linux, but not like LookingGlass, because I\'m not sure looking a movie by a 45° angle is very plaisant. My idea is that the desktop is a house, or any other place, and the contents (multimedia, games, settings, office, ...) are put in rooms. So, we can navigate in the house by clicking on doors, or by the navigator (in green), or with the mouse, ... The documents are placed on the walls (just a screenshot of the doc), clicking on one actives it, and the camera moves to be in front of it. \"put in front\" unsticks the document, giving full access.
thanks you

Yes, this thing reminded me instantly of that famous OS, MS Bob (where do you think that anooying search dog and that red button (that inspired 'Clippy the forsaken anooyance') came from?

Melinda French, now Melinda Gates, had an idea for an easy to use desktop, and since Bill did it, now they can't kill off the legacy of the failure (because they're married now) so Bill makes her feel better by having elemnts of Bob in all current windows software.

If you want this kind of 3D desktop under linux, check out http://www.opencroquet.org/ . Not only is is 3D and all, but also online and collaborative, multiple users can share the same space at the same time even - far beyond this simple mockup. Check it out.

Terrible, terrible...

What is your typical user?
1. This is useless waste of resources and time for a power user.
2. This is terribly slow for office use.
4. Idiot users will not understand it.

Open source community is about people writting software for themselves. Why would anyone want to impose this on himself?

On the other hand - M$ sells stuff to earn money (notice the absence of words "develop", "software" and "users"?) They might (and have) come up with such a way to navigate a computer.
They burned for it too.

Nope. Really bad idea.

XCruise - A 3D directory browser by Yusuke Shinyama of cs.nyu.edu

uses the GSS and P layout really cool to fly around in the file system
