contactlist integration

Description:

This is an idea for a more integrated way to handle contacts. It is basically a collection of a few seperate ideas (some of which are not new, I'm sure) illustrated by a screenshot.

1) The contactlist could be integrated into Konqueror. The concept of a contactlist is, after all, not very different from a file list: both are a list of objects with properties, which can be added, modified, removed etc. Contactgroups could be seen as folders. Special users, such as root, could be made hidden in the usual way by putting a dot in front of the name. I don't know if one of the objects of KDE4 will be to have Konqueror be an even more versatile application, but if so this might be an idea. The contaclist could, for example, be made a kioslave (In the screenshot I presented it as such) or be part of the filesystem (e.g. like so: /networking/contacts/).

2) A single contactlist coulde be used for a range of applications: for Kopete, KMail, the login manager and anything you can think of. I read this somewhere (I forgot where, I'm afraid) and I thought this was a very good idea, so I'm basically repeating it here.

In the screenshots you can see the ideas put to work. Obviously some improvements could be made here. For example, it would be nice to be able to see right away which contacts are online.

What do you guys think?

integrating kopete more into konqueror would be an amazing idea it could also be added as like a metabar type of thing like amarok is added in konqeror that would probably be an easier implementation of this idea i would assume and if it isnt its always a different view

For second part, it already exist. Use kdepim package and take a look on kadressbook. Try to "export contacts" from kopete ans you will be able to send instant message from you addressbook. Try to add adressbook ressources (in kcontrol/KDE resources).

For the first point, I am surprised, it don't already exist. It is only a kio to add. But, I realy see what you want to do with your contacts in konqueror? why not use kaddressbook?

i am aware that there is a link between kopete and kaddressbook, but it is not quite the same thing as having only one source alltogether. after all, you can always add a new kopete contact without adding it to the kaddressbook and vice versa. also there are more applications which might use a central addressbook, although admittedly chat-contacts and email-contacts would probably be the main focus.

on the konqueror-integration thing: having a dedicated addressbook app works fine, obviously. i just feel when another more general app, konqueror in this case, could be used to this end, (without having to bend in all kinds of odd directions) there might be no need for a dedicated app.

also there could be more ways to acces the contactlist. having the contactlist integrated in the menu, as in the 'KDE4 mockup' here at kde-look.org, seems like an excellent idea to me as well....

such were my lines of thought ;)

I actually meant this mockup by Eriol: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=28476

the contactlist you point out is, however, quite nice. it does not really do anything to make the contactlist more universal -it simply uses kaddressbook, i believe -but it is certainly a nice way to access this information. i think it would be nice to have more than one way to access your addressbook, ie through a menu, through konqueror and by means of a dedicated addressbook-application
