Description:

I think it would be a good idea to modify how the desktop consider objects inside it (icons)

Instead of having icons as the objects on it, let's create a class called "widget" or "object" "desklet" or whatever you like. I'll call them "KADGET" in this writing...

This KADGETs would be pretty configurable, and easily accesible to other kde programs. Each one would have a front face, actions associated with mouse events.

Each app creating a KADGET would be responsible for rendering the front face to Kdesktop, and Kdesktop would be the responsible of drawing it to X. Also, Kdesktop would only send a mouse event to the application controlling the front face.

Thus, Kdesktop would be a Kadget manager.

Then, to simulate the functionality we have with the current kdesktop, doing a kdesktop plugin (program) which would render kadgets called "icons".
The source of this icons can be many:
* local files in $HOME/Desktop:
* special system icons (like My PC, or Documents in windows)
* media and hardware notifications
* network connections
* Connection to other programs (like kdebluetooth to show discovered devices)
* Special Actions (instead of the popup windows when connecting a new media device)
* Any other use for icons in the desktop??

A second plugin would render the background, being able to render still pictues, animations, slow mo movies, or even 3D objects.

A third plugin, would be superkaramba as it is, just connecting to kdesktop instead of creating a new window sent to the background.

Some other I can think of, would be programs like kroller, and the such.

Thus, kdesktop being a kadget manager, could take control were the kadgets' front faces are rendered, and avoiding kadgets's overlapping. It would give the option to create or remove kadget, and launching the apps required for each kadget,

Also, as an even advanced idea, would be the ability to resize the kdesktop to different resolutions without moving the kadgets, and even if they become of lesser quality, they are in place and working as one would expect.

I think it's an ambicious idea, and if ill-programmed, a very processing hungry one.... but I'm not the best programmer around here...

What do you think?

It is obvious that our frien missed something, I put a link to the plasma project web page, so s/he can read about the plasma project. All that and more is already included into plasma.
