Description:

KDE4 will take advantage of "Tenor", a contextual linking engine, so an easy way to tag files is in order.

Tagging important files means "boosting" the ability to find them by metadata or "context". Imagine a file property dialog with a Tab called "Tags", or Labels, or Emblems... From this dialog the users could set graphic/text attributes to files, for later searching by metadata. Another possibility could be an expandable "Add Note" widget, so to have complete flexibility as to what include in the metedata :-) (check 3rd mockup)

Rocking Meta-tagging

There could be some predefined emblems like Important, New, Approved and so on, the the ability to add custom user-defined images/tags and finally a free form "Notes" form.

The mockups don't show it well, but the predefined emblems should have explicit colors/meaning like Red/Urgent, Green/Approved and so on.

See similar concepts on this site:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33909
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33861
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33592

There is a similar idea for GNOME, but it's limited to tags, like we already have in many apps. I believe the "wow factor" is the combo "emblems + tags" http://www.chipx86.com/blog/?p=140

PS: to those asking:
Style: QtCurve
Kwin: Knifty
Background: not free (search Hed Kandi)
Colorscheme: customized clearlooks

Changelog:

Added third mockup with expandable "Add Note" widget

Added reference to similar ideas on this site/section.

Added second UI mockup with an Action based concept, thanks to puelocesar and hili for the suggestion

Added a mockup, the download links to the xcf sources

I think your brainstorm sounds very interesting.
Mockups of different UI's would be nice.

I never stop to amaze about the advanced features in the human bodys's simplicity.

Great idea. That would really help organize and keep track of your files.

 good idea

Good, but I think the tagging could be easier and faster, like right click -> assign label, or drag the label to the file

propetiers are not very intuitive...

Of necessity, this honor is generally bestowed posthumously."

agreed, the file property was just the easiest way to do a mockup :-) Anyway, a full dialog window is needed to perform operations like adding a new tag/emblem.

The second mockup I was going to make was an Action menu... like you right-click on a file -> Assign Tag. That would still need to open the dialog window, unless we had mini emblems embedded in the context menu, say 16x16px, which is deprecated :/

 Might be handy

But in most cases I do not want to spend a lot of time adding meta data to my files.

I think Tenor will try to gather as much meta information without user intervention.

Also, if Tenor results can be grouped in virtual folders, this kind of tags will probably not be needed anymore since you could have a virtual folder per tag (and it would update automaticly when files are added).

meta data and user defined tags are different things, moreover you don't have to start labelling *all* of your files, just some important files you might want to cathegorize or label somehow.

ie: my pc isn't smart enough to understand that track06-guitar-reverb.wav is to be considered "Final", or that the bunch of photos I've transferred from my camera are to be labelled "DIY Porn" and so on

:-)

But pc may be programmed to be wise enough to give user ability to allow asking him/her if he/she wants to popup labels dialog everytime something is dropped on local filesystem. This would be nice, wouldn't it ?

yes Ricardo, that would be a nice feature, but the behaviour should be configurable, I for one wouldn't like to be asked every time

 Please for ALL apps

It would be cool, if ALL! KDE4 applications could use the same labels, so if you add e.g a label in digikam for certain pictures, you can also use this label in KOffice, Konqueror, KMail etc.

There are also Categories in KOrganizer and other apps, these should be merged, too.

Rightklick -> Add label (or for already added labels:) -> Select label is the best way to do it, I think.

I like your idea quite a lot. I voted for it.

On the other hand, what is that style in the mockup? Where can I find it?
