Description:

Searching by Color Label
Besides the visual benefits of having certain files tagged with a Color Label, there’s a hidden benefit: You can search for files by their color. For example, let’s say you misplaced an important file for a project you were working on. You can press Command-F to bring up the Find function, and from the Search for Items pop-up menu, choose Label. Then, click on the color for the files you labeled in that project, click the Search button, and it will instantly find and display all the files with that color. Searching by color — only Apple is cool enough to come up with a search like this!

 Too unoriginal

by DaBlade on: Jan 9 2006

Score 50%

This is obviously an idea copypasted out of OSX.I think KDE4 should be as original as possible.
However, I think one should be able to mark files like "Urgent", "Important", "Archive", "Crap" and so on, and sort through that instead. Would be a twist on the color system, while still a bit original.

 Visual search time

by CsorbaGomba on: Jan 9 2006

Score 50%

Visual search time for a user is in inverse ratio to the number of colors, number of other objects, etc.

So ok, you can add extra information with colors, but you also make it harder to look up things.

I think it's not a bad idea, but it should be handled with caution. The number of colors should be VERY FEW. 6 maximum.

Making folders uniqe by coloring...the icons are not enough?
But how is the phrase goes? "The test of the pudding is the eating" :)

 Yessss

Well, it reminds me the times I used Mac Os 7, 8 and 9, after this I bought a PC :(

Well, I used this feature a lot and actually I think is a good idea, but I think it coul be improved. As CsorbaGomba said, colors could be associated with a status, like "Important", "Personal" or something like this. It could be a good idea also not only associate the icon with a color or meaning, but also to a particular "icon modifier", something to rensamble the status.
For example: if I mark an "Urgent" folder, there may appear some flames under it, if it's "Important" it should appear an exclamation mark, just like a little arrow appears in symbolic links.

Another (completly different) way to manage it could be to set tags, like gmail's tags on messages: I can define my tags, and one item can have more than one tag (these could be "important", "family", etc).

anyway, it's a great idea!

 Gnome's Emblems

by thebeast on: Jan 9 2006

This reminds me of Gnome's emblem feature in Nautilus. You can mark any file or directory with a specific emblem (like 'new', 'favorite', 'finished', etc.). I like the idea a lot but maybe we could implement it better in kde 4 somehow. Ideas?

Nice idea but I prefer to mark my files as Important, Business, Work, Family, Junk, etc. and search on these categories instead of colors.
