Description:

This is a mockup of extenders the way i would love to see them in kde 4.

first my mockups are based on this awesome mockup: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=28476

Screenshot 1 shows a status field of the copying process. instead of open a popup right in the center of the screen that annoys the user, in my mockup the user can track the process in the corner and keep on working.

Screenshot 2 continues this principle. so if a new medium is deteced this notification doesnt pop up in the user face and the user can ignore this popup if it isnt important to him. Otherwise if he need this notification he still has it.

this principle can be expended in many ways.

Screenshot 3 shows a mockup of a system update just with extenders in three steps.

Changelog:

February 6th 2006 - changed the category from KDE Improvements to KDE 4 Brainstorm

small bug fixes at all screenshots and added screenshot 3

 Absolutely!

Now this got to be made by default in KDE4. A good looking applet that would make disapear the very annoying poping out of windows at all occasions. No need for a big window, (that hide your work) to show how far your download has been. As I said, this MUST be integrated in KDE 4 by default, or I hang myself.

Oh! And when there would more than one message to display, the little icon in the top bar could fade slowly and smoothly to the next message icon. Of course, since it is KDE, this could be turned off and then there would be more than one icon.

 Download applet

I'm drooling at the thought of having my downloads put into a applet. It would be FABULOUS if that were integrated into KIO and KGet.
Then again, the thought alone of detachable applets stretches my mind..
We will see what comes of it!

 differentiation

Good choice on differentiating the different notification types by coulours and icons. I think that a complete categorizing and prioritizing of notifications has to be done. For example, in your file copying notification, a download, upload, and any kind of file transfer (hell, even p2p file transfers, like amule or bitorrent, for example) would be under it.
In the update notification you have, if it's for security updates, it would also include firewall blocking. And so on. I think you're on the right track!

 Awesome design

Your work is excellent! Annoying dialog windows for file copying are always all over the desktop, any previous system I've seen has always been ugly and annoying but your design is beautiful. I hope your work makes it into KDE 4.

 an issue

System update and package install should
be done with distro-specific tools,
anything non distro-specific is broken
and will not install all the files in the
REALLY correct path for every distro.....
So these functionality IMHO should not be
inside the kde-core (but they can be part
of kde-misc or kde-extra branches)
