Description:

This is what i posted on the KGet bugzilla. If you agree with me, then please vote for this wish so it gets implemented. This is just a screenshot of my current configuration and a proposal for the default KGet look.

" The KGet UI is too confusing for new users and it needs to be simplified. KGet is not an app that is used for extended periods of time, so users do not have the time or the need to learn what the toolbar icons do. i recommend removing most of them and leaving only resume, pause, delete, restart and paste. The icons should also have text beside them to explain what they are. A person should be able to use all the basic features of kget the first time they open it, and more advanced features should remain in the menus.

Also the "Resumed" and "Count" lists should be removed by default as well because they are confusing and arent needed by the majority of people. "

Changelog:

Moved to KDE 4 Brainstorm

You defenitly should remove the text at the icons. They are clear enough. For the rest of it, it's a clean and clear interface

i like having the text there because it fills in the empty space. it looks too empty without it IMO.

 Looks Good, but...

Oh the whole, it looks good, but since it is for new users I would make two suggestions to your UI.

Add the "Toggle Expert Mode" button, then new users can easily see that there are more options if they so desire to have a look and figure them out.

And, in the colums - add "Local Directory" so they can see where the file is going to.

They may not have stated a default folder for that file type, or may have just plain forgotten. It would be simpler looking on the main UI rather than going to the log window or searching about folders for a file you don't really know the name of 'cause you wern't paying that much attention when you clicked to download.

That perhaps kget should copy the UI that Firefox or Opera uses to an extent. Most of the time that I use kget it ends up scrolling horizontally way off my screen - and I have a 19" monitor at 1600x1200! The address being removed or put on it's own line would be a big improvement. Perhaps nudging the speed and remaining time to a line below the filename too..

 Already simplified

The KGet UI has already been simplified in the SVN, so we will see it in KDE 3.5. Take a look at SVN commit 446257 by uwolfer:

--------------------------------
Simplified maintoolbar.
Added a new button for "start new download".
Removed buttons for "timer", "show log window", "expert mode", "use last dir", "autopaste", and "whats this". These actions are still available in the menus.

Thanks to Víctor Fernández Martínez for the patch (slightly modified by me).
--------------------------------

Hey, Víctor Fernandez is me. ;)
