move window like mplayer

Description:

Hi, this is an idea about moving windows. Just imagine when YOu do not have to klick on "windows decoration" to move window" but enywhere whwere You like to but except with buttoms, tabs, editable fields etc. Like moving mplayer window.

What du you think about this idea?

Changelog:

I have created an image with Gimp. 'Mouse clicks'means that user have to click for exmple 2 times on any part of the window except buttons, comboboxes, editable fields - TO MOVE THE WINDOW JUST CLICK & HOLD ON EVERYTHING THAT IS NOT EDITABLE or CAN BE MARKED etc. to 'Close', 'Maximize' or 'Minimize'. Or mayby 'Mouse Clicks' put into individual options - 3 clicks to close the window, 2 clicks to minimize the window, 4 clicks to 'Above Others' etc.

AND yes I know that this is not an kde-'idea.org' but if I have IDEA but no skills so where can I put it?, to kde.bugs - its not a bug, to sigle developer - as You can see not everyone like new things and chalanges, problems that comes with new IDEAs.

 WHEN?

by lane on: Apr 26 2005

When will people FINALLY stop to spam kde-apps.org with their ideas?

it's kde-APPS.org, not kde-IDEAS.org. If you have "suggestions"(if you want to move it from everywhere within the window, hold alt down and press left mouse button), then submit it to bugs.kde.org where people can close them.. here it's just *annoying* that some percent of the content are just spam.

SERIOUSLY. And for folks who don't know, KDE (and some other Window Managers) default to Alt + Left Click to drag a window around, regardless as to where you clicked it.

This is set up in Control Center -> Window Behavior -> Actions.

Modifier key: [Alt]
Modifier key + left button: [Move]
etc.

You can, for example, change the modifier to Meta instead of Alt, or make the modified Left click lower the window, instead of move it.

Sheesh! So anyway, how do we get poorly-written, unnecessary "App" postings like this removed!?

Maybe when the listing for KDE 4 Brainstorms isn't in the content table to the left.

 Bug Report

First, this is really not the place for requests like these. I would at least proof read your post before posting something like this, but they are better suited to be posted on bugs.kde.org, especially considering your request/suggestion does not have any graphical merits.

Secondly, while I'm not 100% clear of your request, I believe what you are looking for is already implemented.

Try holding down and left click drag anywhere on a window. You can also right click drag to resize windows (depending on where you click, it will resize only horizontally, only vertically, or both)

Ehhhh... Have you tried Alt+Click and move the window around? It's strange, but it works for me :) Like someone already said, stop spamming this site with cheap ideas.

 Prolly Not Good Idea

IMO, it will make the interface confusing. As an example, toolbar buttons don't have distinctive borders until you hover over them (with most styles). In an attempt to move the window you go for the "window-space" around the toolbar icon and instead you'll click the toolbar button.

Think you'll never do this? It's obvious where the buttons are? How about the last button on the right, where is the edge of that button?

How about things that you can drag that aren't the window. You'll grab, eg. the toolbar handle in an attempt to grab the window and get frustrated when you move the toolbar and not the window.

Sure apple's brushed metal windows can be moved by dragging any metal looking section, so they have proved you can make a non-confusing method for doing this. However even if KDE adopted this "everything that has a certain look drags the window" approach it will be an annoying feature because of the number of times you drag the window when you accidently miss click etc.

These are just my opionions. However, having been negative about the idea I'd like to add that my experience has shown that bad ideas often develop into great ideas under the open source development model. So make a patch and see what happens.

I agree with people who moan about trivial ideas appearing on kde-apps. This isn't the place for them. However it is still important to get these ideas discussed so that real innovations can actually evolve.

Well said and very true.
I'd like to add there's no need to be harsh with people. The whole FOSS is still developing. In time there will be places to post ideas. Patience is what is called for.

 In place

Seriously, I don't think ideas posted to bugs.kde.org get as much attention as at kde-apps. Take it or leave it, bugs.kde.org is read by developers and not by people who just read reviews, download, evaluate, and give thumbs up or down.

We need a place where people can talk about their KDE applications. It is always the most convenient way the users choose, not the way they are supposed to. How many users (read, not developers) would check bugs.kde.org and leave their comments there? With kde-apps, you get the same people reviewing existing and not-yet-existing applications. Feedback is important. Actually, it is more important than anything else.

Traffic? How many posts with mockups a day do we get here? Three, four a week? I don't think it is that bad. Plus I have already seen someone implemented an idea posted here. I think there is still time for the idea-posters to move on to another site. And this time will come when there are more mockups than applications. Then developers will hunt bugs.kde.org for ideas. Then the mockups will be accompanied by comments from potential users.

What do you think?
