Description:

*******************************************
*** KYum is now hosted on Sourceforge! ***
*******************************************

KYum is a graphical user-frontend for the rpm package manager yum. You can view and modify repositories and yum.conf and control most of yum's operations with it in a convenient way.

Thanks to R. Wolters and J. Schmitt for their initial SPEC file versions and to all others who contributed to kyum's development in any way.

Changelog:

2005-07-24 V0.7.5 Steffen Offermann (steffen_ac@yahoo.com)

* Fix: Processes started within dialogs (e.g. to show
dependencies) were immediately killed due to a
forgotten line in the source.

* Actions view: The package list now has a title.

2005-07-23 V0.7.4 Steffen Offermann (steffen_ac@yahoo.com)

* Fix: Resizable dialogs now work as expected (thanks to
S. Pistone).

* Repository view: If possible, $basearch, $arch and $releasever
will be expanded to their actual values.

* Actions view: The context-menu item "Query Installed Version"
is now available in two versions: "short" and "extended" (using
"rpm -q" and "rpm -qi" respectively to retrieve the desired
information).

* Before removing installed packages, a list of packages that rely
on these packages is displayed and the user must confirm that
all these packages are safe to be uninstalled.

2005-07-19 V0.7.3 Steffen Offermann (steffen_ac@yahoo.com)

* Fix: Results of "Find" operation were only shown in the output
view, not in the list view.

* Fix: "Clean yum's cache" dialog: "yum -y clean" was executed
instead of "yum -y clean all".

* Added info about yum's confusing behavior regarding the clean
operation (only the cache for enabled repositories will be
cleaned).

* Added context-menu to package list view. Currently available
menu options are:

- remove from list
- show package dependencies
- query installed version (via rpm).

2005-07-12 V0.7.2 Steffen Offermann (steffen_ac@yahoo.com)

* Selecting or deselecting packages while installing/updating
packages is now possible without any side-effects.

* The package version number will be appended to the name of
the package when uninstalling installed packages.

* The confirmation dialog when yum.conf and repositories have
been saved can now be disabled.

2005-06-03 V0.7.1 Steffen Offermann (steffen_ac@yahoo.com)

* Fix: KYum crashed, when the specified folder for *.repo files
did not exist.

* Enabled "Install"-action in Groups view. But still no fancy
group support other than the limited one provided by yum.

* The editor for yum.conf now is a set of edit fields with
context help.

New options unknown to KYum cannot (yet) be added from within
KYum but will be preserved and are editable if they exist in
yum.conf (i.e. you can still add new items to yum.conf outside
KYum). These are mostly options that are rarely used or make no
sense with KYum.

* Option "reposdir" in yum.conf will now be recognized and used.

* When installing/updating selected packages, the respective packages
will be removed from the displayed list of available/updatable
packages if the installation was successful (i.e. yum's exit code
was 0).

* Added information about number and total download size of selected
packages.

* Selected (checked) packages are highlighted in the list.

* Actions tab / Groups tab: The command line of the executed command
is shown in the output window.

* The supplied file kyum_sysinfo.py is now installed in
$(kde_datadir)/kyum instead of $(kde_bindir).

* Made some colors and flags configurable.

 Nice application

Score 50%

Hi, it's a very nice application.
Works for me very well and I've build an RPM for fc3:
http://www.personal.uni-jena.de/~p1woro/rpms/kyum-0.1-1.i386.rpm

Comments:
- The "terminated" messages are a little bit confusing - it would be better if there were messages like "successfull" or "error" or something like that.

Thanks for the rpm!

Yes, you're right, the displayed information should be more precise. But that's only one of many topics to be adressed. I hope I'll eventually find time to improve kyum. Until now I've only spent three or four days of work on it.

Compiling completed without warnings or errors and the app runs fine. So, the problem was indeed with the RPM. Did you use rpmbuild -ba to build the rpm?

I am using FC3 (full install, abd fully updated) on an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 512Mb ram, 160Gb HD. I build lots of RPM's and I have never had anyone inform me of a problem with any of my rpm's.

Either install the *.rpm using the command "rpm -ihv kyum-0.6.1-1.i386.rpm", or extract the source and compile it yourself. In the latter case you'll have to type "./configure" inside the directory kyum-0.6.1 and then "make install" to build the program. You need to be root to install programs, so first type "su" and enter the root password.

If you are upgrading, i.e. you have an older version of kyum installed, use "rpm -Uhv" instead of "rpm -ihv".

You'll find the installed application somewhere in your KDE system menu.

 A question/Request

I'm no very experienced with apt, but for what I've seen aptitude and yum have very similar comands (search, install, delete, clean). So, would it be to dificult to make kyum a generic front end for aptitude and yum?

If this could be pulled out I'll bet it would become the defacto update manager for Kubuntu, linspire, xandros, etc

Of course this is just a question (maybe there is a whish hidden inside)

I don't know much about apt myself, but I already considered that. I guess it could be done, although currently I cannot afford to spend much time on kyum.

Give me a month or two. Hopefully I'll have a little more time for improvements and enhancements then.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

 .spec -file

Hi,
Great piece of software.

I would like to build a rpm -package from source because all my computers don't have development -libararies or -tools installed and shared rpm -packages didn't work.

Is there a way to make .spec -file or can I get one from somewhere?

All my computers use Fedora Core 3.

One of those little things that makes linux "desktop ready" is just these userfriendly softwares like kyum. No ordinary user like using terminal window and type commands.

Great job!

You can download an SRPM from http://www-users.rwth-aachen.de/Steffen.Offermann/Download/kyum-0.5.1-0.1.src.rpm.

The SPEC was mainly written by R. Wolters.

Did you try the supplied RPM, or did you compile yourself? The RPM was built on a FC3 system with a 2.6.11.6 kernel, KDE 3.4, yum 2.2.0, gcc 3.4.3, Qt 3.3.4.

I have never seen kyum crash, although I use it a lot - and after a first quick look at your backlog and the source, I cannot find an obvious error.

Would updating Qt be an option for you? Altgough, of course, I cannot promise that it will help.

Even with your yum.conf and after deleting my repo files I could not make kyum crash. Maybe it depends on your version of KDE or Qt, or whatever.

But as Roland (liquidat) said: kyum expects the newer version of yum with repo files. Maybe I should extend its abilities to recognize repos defined in yum.conf, too.

Please be aware, that with kyum you cannot use comments in your configuration files - they will not be preserved when the files are saved. Instead of using comments, kyum offers the (much more useful) possibility of defining profiles for different configuration settings.

Steffen

This is actually quite correct. It would be best if either using configure or a Requires tag in the spec file to assure that the yum version is sufficient.

Would you please consider adding a display column to the available updates list that indicates the current version installed? I use a lot of repos, and some things I prefer to keep updated only from the "official fedora" repos and for other packages I will update from any repo. It helps me to know where the current version I have is from when I try to remember what I prefer to update from where. This would also let users know if an update is an upstream version update or not.

I'am afraid this information is not available. This is a feature that yum does not support. The only possible workaround would be to run "yum list installed" and then "yum list updates" to get all the desired information, but since yum is so slow already, this would - in my opinion - be rather annoying than helpful.

Maybe the yum programmers should be asked to add this feature in future versions of yum.
