KDE SVG Aurora

Description:

A stylized version of the mystical phenomenom aurora taking place near a pine forest. The deep purple and blue hues contrast with the light greenish skylights, forming an intriguing and soothing color palette. You can almost feel the atmosphere of watching the slowly fading waves of green light.

Changelog:

7 January 2005 15:38 GMT+0100:
- I spend some more hours on getting this wallpaper to work with KDE 3.4 and it now renders correctly in the KDE SVG Icon renderer which means I have accomplished my goal! I can still optimize this version, it's kind of big right now but it looks good.

22 December 2004 23:09 GMT+0100:
- Added a variation on the main wallpaper to the download archive which has the trees a bit shifted upwards, to make them look taller.

Take a picture of a nice tree against a light background. Backlighting works best as you get a very light background and an almost black tree. You then adjust brightness/contrast and the levels in GIMP. To finish it off, you use a vector tracer on your 2-bit image, like potrace.

Hope this helps, it's how I work.

i do like like your stars ;) One thing that bugs me a bit is the trees. i think they need to go a tiny bit higher up. maybe just try streching them out a bit. This may just be me as i am from seattle where the trees are all tall. overall this work is awesome.

I made the trees like this to create the effect of looking upwards to the sky. This way, the Aurora effect is a bit stronger, putting more emphasis on the sky itself instead of the trees. I'll make a new version with the trees a bit shifted, when it's uploaded let me know if it suits your taste better!

And before I forget: thanks for the kind words!

 SVG Background

How do you guys get svg images to actually work as your background. I think I've installed the viewer, and I have tried to set an svg image as my backgroud, but it never seems to work. I get some random image when I try to set and svg image as my background. Any suggestions.

Like it, the two-gear KDE-logo is especially great.

I'd suggest using a slightly different colour than the navy blue, and purples. Or changing the green. They are not too comfortable against each other. Try the compliment of the green or something adjacent on the colour wheel. Then it would look awesome :)

I'm using it as my desktop now. As it came with KDE that's endorsement enough but I decided to try it and at first it doesn't look anything special but it has so much depth the more you look the more you see. Nice one.
